Went to order ammo for one of my customers and after ringing up a $ 450 order I was surprised to see that I needed almost $200 more to get free shipping. They wanted to tack on another $160 for shipping. Moving to another distributor I ordered the same amount of ammo and the shipping was a whopping $7.50. That is right, $7.50.

Check your freight before you hit the send button.

NAME THEM so they will be known. As long as people don't make shoddy practices known, they will continue. People here don't mind complaining about Taurus, Dicks, Cabelas or others, it's time to shine a light on i'net or local dlstributors and resellers so others can vote with their feet or wallet.

Certainly not defending the actions described in the OP, but it wouldn't surprise me to see more of this should the current crisis get really bad.

No secret that some merchants have had a tendency to gouge on shipping costs even before COVID-19. Now that more and more of us are sheltering in place and ordering more goods online, merchants of all kinds are swamped with orders. Freight companies are behind and overloaded and probably have fewer hands to do the work. As this practice sets in and even increases, market adjustments will inevitably take place.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see minimum order thresholds, set shipping day/set delivery day for your zip code and higher freight costs being passed to we the consumers.

Last week came back from the West Coast and the highways are full of trucks. It was pretty bad up to Dallas, thinned out a bit east of Dallas, but, still lots of trucks on the road. I have a hard time believing that lack of transport is the cause, but then, maybe they are dumping ammunition for eggs! Local stores are all out of eggs, snack foods, macaroni and cheese, pasta, and ready to eat meals. Luckily no one cooks anymore so fresh food is plentiful, and I am going to make Gumbo. But anything that can be microwaved or opened with a can opener, is thin on the shelves.

The story in my mind is of millions of morbidly obese American's hoarding cheetos, potato chips, vienna sausages and piling stacks of them around their couches. They won't move till the internet goes down and they can't stream videos.

Let’s face it. Some companies are just not big fish. Even those that we think are.

Toilet paper is bulky. And worth a lot more than your sling or die set or ...

They probably got bumped down the list, for now. If my weight limit was met with half a truck of lead, but got paid more for a lighter weight full truck of rolled paper, who do you think I would charge more?

I’m not suddenly (redacted) just because there is crisis, overblown, serious or otherwise.
Some days cost more, for a verity of reasons.

Choice is always the answer.

A short primer on how truck freight charges work is in order here.

All trucks are restricted to a certain weight. Most Dry Van freight (the plain old trailers you see on the road are Dry Vans.) you see, the company wants as much on that trailer as possible. It costs the same to take a trailer from point A to B if it's full of half full.
Most of those trailers you see are not full.

Trucking companies classify freight in density ranges. The higher density, the cheaper per pound it ships. This is for LTL, or Less than Truck Load. A full trailer is different.

For instance, a barrel of lead would go Class 100, which is he least expensive class per pound. It's very dense, takes up a relatively small amount of room.

A pallet of toilet rolls is not very dense at all. It goes class 250, a very expensive per pound class.

So, it costs more to ship bulky, lightweight freight, but does the freight company make more ? Not really, as the companies charge per class/pound. The bulky freight just takes up more room.

The part that bugs me is the fact some wholesalers sell items at their cost and then include shipping department wages, order packaging/processing cost into the actual shipping cost.
My Actual Experience:
Nachez is one that did this to me a number of years back. If they had shipped my bullet order USPO Flat Rate the shipping cost would have been $15, but instead it was over $67! They may have changed now, not sure as I haven’t ordered from them since.
MBC on the other hand ships their product of 4 boxes of boolits (2000) for that same Flat Rate of $15. Kudos for them keeping it honest!
But always check final cost before placing an order to make an informed decision!

This was one of my main wholesale distributors. Zanders. I canceled the order and re-ordered with RSR Group. Even little sources like Natchez is cheaper on shipping than Zanders.

By the same token, we want to be sure to support those who take care of us in good times and bad. RMR, MB, and Midway come to mind right off the bat.

Also don't use abbrevistions...who is RMR.. MB?

If you want to complain or compliment someone, make sure to properly identify them so there is no confision.

I'm curious how many of you actually ship items regularly. Because I do, and shipping is god awful expensive and has been on a constant steady climb upwards year after year. I do see that some retailers seem stuck on using one shipper, because THEY get a good rate. But when they can ship an item using USPS flat rate but instead use UPS and it costs 50% more, that ticks me off.

UPS and FedEx quit using just weight and started using size metrics as well. So your giant roll of paper towels is gonna cost alot more than you think to ship because it is large. I've quit selling large items if I can help it. It just costs me too much to ship as a little guy.

When someone offers free shipping, do you actually think UPS or FedEx don't charge them?
