New York hunters

Dang troy, that's a bummer, I hope you get it done in time for the season.

I just got an optic mount for my SKS and I'm hoping to have enough saved with enough time before deer season to buy an optic and get it mounted. I'll need to get a 5rnd mag or make a mag block/stop so the mag it has on it only takes 5 rounds.

I got signed up for the Cornell University hunt this year again, I hope I have better luck than I did last year, but by the time that season rolls around in January, the deer are pretty spooked.

Yep, there are public lands to hunt up here, but not a lot. Certainly not enough for the number hunters, in my opinion. I’ve been lucky enough to never need to hunt public land.
That's for darn sure. It's great if you have access to private land or can hunt during the time most people work. Other than that it's a bunch of really small patches of state forest and wildlife management areas. Your best bet for a lot of land that doesn't get hunted much is Iroquois national wildlife refuge. Montezuma gets hunted pretty heavily.

Can you hunt Finger Lakes National Forest?

.
I just cut down a piece of 2x4 to fit under the follower on my SKS, limiting it to 5 rounds when I hunted it in NY. An email from DEC said that was sufficient.

Well it seams things are lining up for a bunch of you guys.
We have everything pretty much set for deer hunting and trapping.

Just a few minor purchases and we will be 100g ready.
Maybe next season if I have the extra funds I might come back after Christmas for a month to blackpowder hunting deer in Pennsylvania.

We need to get serious on trapping coyotes, a bitch coyote with pups will kill a deer fawn a week.

I have been talking to Charlie Maschec at Hoosier Trapping Supply about him, Justin and Jake coming back to New York to trap fisher, fox & coyote for a week and a half .
When I get my Christmas bonus I'm buying a airline ticket to Indianapolis so I can attend their trapping Rendezvous.
It is always the last Saturday in September.
I wanted to go last weekend but spent $1,000 for my new traditions 350 legend rifle, scope rings, ammo and trapping supplies.
When I go to the Rendezvous next September I'll get there Friday and attend the Friday afternoon BBQ, help out with things, get there early Saturday morning, enjoy the day with fellow trappers, check out their shop. Then Sunday check out the area before coming back to Washington State.

Seen a fresh fox road kill a few days ago, would have stopped to grab it but was working. Lgs is doing biggest doe, no entry fee. Winner gets $50 I thought that was nice of him, gets some people in the door. I've been seeing my 3 legged pet doe over that last few weeks, she lost her leg 4 years ago and stays around me during deer season. She has her fawns from this year with her, last year she had a little buck. She will run over if you call her and she loves powdered donuts. I may try to get some orange on her soon.

www at the junk yard this week looking to get a dump body for a small international medium duty truck we are trying to put together for firewood. Of course I find one of my favorite trucks sitting out back and the owner said $1000 wish I had the money it would be a sweet truck. It's a early 70s international harvester 3/4 ton, has a cool old wrecker on it 4x4 v8 stick shift. It looks to be the high end model since it has ac.

Here's one just like it

That is a sweet-looking IH. At first I thought it was a stretched Scout.
It looks small in the picture it's bigger then a scout, dad always had cool trucks when I was younger. He had a few scouts,( still probably the best thing off road for stock) he had a nice big body jeep gladiator, bunch of square body chevys. V10 dodge it's a shame the IH trucks rotted so bad, then the jeep guys would rip out the axes then they scraped them.

The old international scouts were a little power house with the four cylinder engines and 4 speed tyranny with high & low.
I had a 65 IH scout and took it places big trucks couldn't go.
Great little 4x4.

What units are your doe tags good for?
We have 7s - 7m and 7r
8.00

I have 7r and 7s. Might try for extra in Nov.

Lots of deer out today, was splitting firewood all day and had 5-6 does come by at about 35 yards. I would have a bow on hand but only thing I got ready now is my recurve. One year I'll get a new compound but don't have much time to bow hunt in wood season. Saw a good 50-60 deer on the 6-7 mile drive home, didn't see any bucks they will be on the move in a few weeks.

Home to maybe squirrel hunt this week, they have been all over this year just busy doing wood.

Hey guys do any of you bow hunt? If so, what camo pattern do you use? I'm thinking about getting some Swiss TZ-80 camo because of the red colors.
I've had deer walk right up to me wearing Plaid shirts either red or green but color doesn't seem to matter to much. Being still is the best camo out there. Buy what fits and looks good to you, I really think camo was more for hunters that didn't want to be seen by other hunters exactly in ny. I've Hurd story's of guys 10 feet from each other in the Stewart state land down my way.

Troy, that's a really good point!

I heard that Stewart state land gets a lot of hunting pressure.
Some of the state land up around chenango county hardly gets any pressure at all.
Stewart is the first piece of state land to hunting for the city hunters coming up, when I say guys 10 feet apart that's not a joke. Orange county for some reason has little public land to hunt other then the 1500 acres close to me and some by the bashakill there's is none.

The 6mms ARC barrel came saturday, looks good and they did a nice job on it. This is the upper and handguard I'll use for it, hope it shoots good tho 1-1.5 moa will do all I plan to use it for.
Just need the bcg, butt stock, buffer and extension, scope mount, trigger and maybe some nicer parts that I already have like the charging handle, saftey, est.

A head or face net covering is the best money you can spend. Others have more years, burmt I’ve been hu ti g nearly 20 years. 2 years ago I started wearing my turkey hunting head net for deer and it is a game changer. 15 yards away, looking directly at me - I don’t move and they go back to eating. Prior years, they look at my face and they r long gone
