i have a jc higgins model 88 .22cal revolver...my question is: what ammo do you use? can you use long rifle ammo or is there a certain ammo for revolvers?

The "RIFLE" in .22 Long Rifle or LR does not mean that the round can only be shot in rifles. Most handguns that are .22 caliber are made for the .22 LR.

The caliber is generally labeled on the pistol somewhere, commonly the barrel. If it says .22 LR then its designed for the .22 Long Rifle. It may say .22 LR/R/S which lets you know that you may use the .22Long Rifle, the .22 Rifle or the .22 Short. It is common to be able to use all 3 in a revolver. You are however limited to the weakest of the ammo listed for example if its labeled .22 S or .22 short only you will not be able to shoot the Long Rifle cartridges in it. You can not shoot .22 magnums in a cylinder designed for the .22 LR/R/S.

I am not familiar with the model 88 , but many of the JC Higgins guns were made by Hi-Standard . Most .22 RF revolvers were made to shoot the .22 LR cartridge and can be fired with .22 Shorts and .22 Longs as well, as they are simply shorter versions of the Long Rifle cartridge.

Exceptions are generaly marked as in ".22 short only" and I can't think of a Hi-Standard or JC Higgins gun marked as such.

i checked the barrel and it only says .22cal...i was just making sure i could fire LR cartridges through it before i tried myself and possibly ruining it. i tried to insert the bullet part of the ammo in the barrel end and it seemed not to fit...is this normal or is the hole just smaller on the exterior of the barrel?

thanks for your replies guys!

Shooting .22 Long rifle in your gun should be just fine .

The bore diameter of the barrel is slightly smaller than the bullet and trying to push the bullet into the bore from the front will not work.

Some cylinder guns in .22 caliber came with both a .22 LR and a .22 magnum cylinder that would interchange in the gun. I have no idea whether yours would have been such a gun ,but strongly suspect not, as generaly only Ruger or Colt made these. The .22 LR round should fit without being sloppy in the chamber - also the .22 Magnum cylinders were typically stamped as such. If there are no markings on the cylinder and the .22 LR cartridges slide in without being sloppy in the chamber, you should be good to go.
