IIRC, I didn't purchase a firearm in 2024. I had a little spare cash as the year ended and decided to treat myself to something.

I shoot 22lr handguns more often than any other kind, so it seemed sensible to start there. I already have small and large 22 revolvers in SA and DA, and nice large semiautos... but no smaller semiautos similar to the 9mm pistols I occasionally carry.

The candidates seemed to be the Ruger SR22, Glock 44, Taurus TX22, and the Bersa PP clone.

I had an SR22 previously and didn't like it at all. Not impressed by the Glocks I own - they're just okay. The Taurus has pretty good reviews, I found one for $239 NiB, and there's a "rebate" for three free magazines. (Keeping my eyes open for a used Bersa in the $150-$200 range.)

It's the smaller "compact" version, so the barrel is 3.6". It's a little bigger than my PM9 or GX4, but a little smaller than my Springfield XDs.

The sights are decent sized. The front sight has a white dot. The rear sight is windage adjustable, and was annoyingly off-center out of the box. :(

The magazines are plastic and hold 13 rounds. They have little helper tabs like the Ruger Marks. The tabs were too small for me, but the mags worked just fine. Had no trouble with them.

Field stripping it takes just a few seconds. NBD.

It was pleasant to shoot. Like a nice compact 9mm, but no recoil. I was having a poor day shooting (hands were too cold), but I shot it as well as my Tanfoglio target model and Sig P226, so it's a pretty decent shooter. I'll try it again next week when the weather is better.

I shot up the ends of two cartons of range ammo: Remington Gold thingies, and Federal Automatch. The rounds were beat up, but I had no malfunctions... until I put my elbows on the shooting bench. That made it malfunction every time, something similar to "limp wristing". Other than that, good reliability with poor ammo.

So far this seems like a nice little plinker. I plan on shooting it - along with my snub 22 revolver - as my main practice pieces for their larger brethren, and they're also just plain fun to shoot. :)

(Note: I think "TORO" means it has mounts for an optic thingie. I'm not interested in that, but the mounts are there.)

If you own a TX22, advice on holsters and ammunition would be appreciated. :)

Nice report. I have been watching the TX22's for awhile now. But I want a 22 revolver first. I am curious about the issue of getting malfunctions when putting elbows on the bench. It would seem that would give a more solid hold and have the opposite effect from limp wristing.

The malfunctions were some kind of user error. Probably due to temperatures in the 20's. But I had one NiB handgun and five that had minor repairs or upgrades, and I was determined to shoot them whether I shivered or not. :)

All my friends that had TX22's raved about them. So, of course, to keep up with my peers I bought one and found out they were right.
Out of the box, it was accurate, but jammed frequently, so I looked online for a solution. I found a Youtube that dealt with malfunctions by cleaning the magazines before use.
That immediately solved the problem. Second, my pistol HATED Federal Automatch. Inaccurate, keyholed, felt kinda gummed up. Golden bullets ran fine. The Automatch problem lasted about 1,000 rounds before they started doing well.
Best thing Taurus ever made, IMHO...

I've had a TX22 (not the compact) for about 2 years now. I bought a G44 about 6 months later. Both were quite reliable, fun guns. In my hands, the Taurus was more accurate, and a hair more reliable (few .22 rimfire autos are 100% reliable, but the Taurus is close). I've shot somewhere between 7K and 12K rounds through it, with the savings over 9mm, it has more than paid for itself. I still have the Taurus, and I may pick up the compact (because, why not)... My G44 just sold on consignment yesterday.

As for holsters, I have thought about carrying my TX22 (just as I have thought about carrying my super light S&W 317), but the only way I see possibly carrying a .22 rimfire is if it is a very lightweight pocket pistol for lower recoil and higher capacity vs. other pocket options (I'd consider a lightweight alloy .22lr or .22mag snub). So far, I have resisted carrying it, if I got a holster, I probably would occasionally carry it.

I've owned 4 regular TX22's, one compact and one Competition model. I still have one regular and the Comp model and gave my kid a regular one and a Comp model. Standard velocity, high velocity, mini-mags...they all handle anything I stuff in the mag. Better than the "upgraded" Ruger pistols in that regard.

No clue on holsters but I'd also want to see if those models have issues similar to the full size ones with the recoil assembly beating the slide to death.

The holsters that fit my Gx4, which you also have one of, fit the TX-22C. ( Hellcat, G26, etc. usually fit the Gx4)
Yes. TORO stands for Taurus Optics Ready Option.

my go-to 22lr pistol is the ruger sr22. based on my own experience after 20k + rounds, i could substitute “sr22” for “tx22” in all the nice comments above and still be 100% accurate. everyone needs a decent, brand-name 22lr pistol, just as everyone needs ice cream, with only the flavors varying. read up, pick one and then get out to shoot the snot out of it.

I'm glad your SR22 runs well. The problem with it, and many other 22 pistols is the limited 10rd magazines.

Maybe 10rds is enough for some people. But I prefer more capacity, if I have the option for it. The TX22 has a larger magazine capacity.

Full disclosure on 22lr semiautos. (These are the ones I own or have owned recently.)

Taurus tip-up 22 - went bang, too small, DAO trigger from Hades

Beretta tip-up 22 - goes bang, too small, trigger good enough to tell that I can't hit anything with it

Phoenix HP22a - bought two used, one works and one doesn't

Ruger SR22 didn't fit my hand well, but functioned just fine.

Browning Buck Mark - great

Ruger Marks - great

Taurus TX22 compact - great so far

Bersa Thunder 22 - We'll see. They've been making them forever, so I'm hopeful. Hope to shoot it Monday or Tuesday when I pick it up. $309 + tax, supporting LGS. :)

I have various 22 revolvers, too. Kinda lacking an LCPII in 22lr. Might be good other than that.

I've got two and they're an absolute blast and run near 100%. I upgraded all the magazines with Tandemkross +5 baseplates. Which extends all the full size mags to 21rds and the compact mags to 18rds. Also applies to the factory 10rd magazines. So you can buy 10's and bump them to 21rds with the extensions. That's a lot of blasting!

If I ever find one of the target model TX's I intend to buy it so I can say I own the ugliest modern pistol made. It makes a HI-Point look beautiful. RFC has lots of both praise and hate for this little gun so I am still straddling the fence on one. I have yet to see one in any of the gunshops I browse so buy it or don't may never become an issue. In the meantime I am perfectly content with my SR22 which has proven over the years to be as dependable as an anvil. It has taught 4 GG kids to shoot a handgun with one more waiting in the wings for warmer weather this year.

sadly some of us are behind enemy lines where ten rounds is a magical distinction between good and “evil.” /s
