I was given a free bottle of nitro solvent from the local gun store. Is it basically just regular bore cleaner or does it clean specific things that a regular bore cleaner doesn't clean? Mine is made my outers. It says it cleans nitro deposits but I have no idea what that is. Newbie question, I know :(

Thanks!

Nitro deposits is carbon residue left over from "nitrocellulose" or smokeless gunpowder burning.

In simple terms, powder & primer fouling.
Or the reason you are cleaning the gun in the first place.

It is a very old term dating from black-powder days.
Then, black powder fouling was cleaned out with boiling hot water, followed by drying the water off of the gun & bore, followed by oiling everything, followed by doing it all over again the next day or two..

Then they invented smokeless, or Nitro powder, and then they invented Nitro Powder solvent to clean it with.
And then you only had to clean it once and you were done.
Without boiling water and burning yourself two days in a row.

So my outers nitro solvent gun cleaner is essentially the same as hoppe's 9?

Excellent! I thank you, rc! You've answered almost every single one of my questions I've ever had on here! I have another one for you regarding black marks on my bolt (all over my bolt) that I cant seem to get off with anything, but I'll ask you when I snap pictures of my bolt to post :)
