No Ammo Delivery for Academy

Yea reloading would be nice but you face the same problems there as you do with factory ammo. Availability and price. I've been picking up items needed to reload over the last year. Thing is how do I replace what I use. Montana Gold is out. I can't find any Zero bullets, primers and powder are hard to come by plus our LGS's don't carry reloading supplies. The stuff at the club is limited and disappears quickly.

The camping out is a pain but it has had its silver linings like the 4 inch 586-5 I picked up from a fellow camper. The new friends and contacts that are already paying off means that camping out does have its benfits to go along with the bad side of waiting 2 hours to get your one box of ammo per caliber with a max of 3 calibers. So you either camp out or do without.

We are going into May and this stuff is still ongoing and shows no sign of getting any better.

i digress queen...around these parts its getting much better (huntsville alabama)
i guess they want to make sure we rednecks get back stocked up first. lol but seriously gander mtn got in a HUGE amount that was still there late last nite. also my lgs raised his limits AND had some cases for sale yesterday..granted, hes right across the street from gander so that could be the reason...

Bingo.

Of course, none of these people will acknowledge that fact.

no offense intended here but im waiting for the trucks to unload and i havent sold a single round...you ammo snobs really need to give it a rest. its getting old hearing you all groan about "not buying in this market" and" waiting till the prices drop" and "oh my gosh, i wouldnt be caught dead standing in a line"....well guess what? i dont have much ammo, and thats how i have to get it right now so you all can just keep waiting around for the prices to drop, while i wait in line and get some ammo.

come on down queen, though their may be a little line you might have to stand in, God forbid, but your sure to get some ammo in these parts. still a ton of .40s in there at closing last nite...250 rd box for 109$...even had them out on the shelves, wouldnt all fit behind the counter...guy did say their was a new Academy opening up in town and that may be why they got so much in..fyi, it was delivered thurs morning and still there last nite/today im sure...my dad got 50 rd boxes of 9mm for 14$ (limit was 10!!) but i was to late for those..i got 10 boxes of 20 rd 223s for 11$ and they had 3 or 4 cases left.

i did have to stand in line, (4 people)so i shouldve just marched myself right out of there without getting any thing!!! That wouldve showed them!!!

I feel for those searching for ammunition. Reminds me of food lines. But you have to eat, most of us don't have to shoot. I am thankful that I have not been hunting for ammuntion since this most recent shortage started.

We have two Academy stores in my area. Haven't paid them a visit. Walmart gets their ammunition around 7:00 AM and there are people waiting to fill their 3-box daily limit.

Do you really have to shoot? Choose to shoot tomorrow or next week. What is the big deal? But I know... you want it when you want it.

Went to an estate sale yesterday.

70 rounds of .41 Long Colt for... 8 bucks. Still in the old boxes to.

Now I need to find a .41 LC revolver!

Fair point...it's become a bit of an obsession..its like the thrill of the hunt kinda thing ya know? i wonder if i would even be buying right now if the shelves were full. its just one of the bad sides of my personality that i have to fight with...sad but true

I'm surprised someone doesn't say it's really a 41 Colt not a 41 LC. :)

The one caliber I have been buying is 480 Ruger. I have been buying a box a week ($33+tax) at Sportsman Warehouse and they usually have it. They have some expensive 44 mag ammo, but inventory is pretty limited. They actually keep the more popular ammunition in the "office" and you have to ask for it. Guess if they like you, they'll sell you a box or three?

Colonel, I know how you feel about ammunition. If I go into a store and they have some that I want and it is reasonably priced. I buy some even if I don't particularly need it. But I was in Walmart a while back and they had 3 100-ct boxes of 38spl target fodder in the cabinet; nothing much else, but the 38spl. I didn't buy. That would have been 300 rounds and that would have lasted a while for me. I am simply not shooting much centerfire handgun ammunition these days. Have lots of 22LR to shoot when I feel like it.

You say "Big Deal" like someone with all the options in the world for the taking. Take moment and rethink.

Nope, that is precisely what I intended to say. You don't have to shoot a gun. It's a sport for most of us. We shoot because we like to shoot. I have the same choices you do.

If you like a certain food product you normally buy at a certain grocery store and they are out of stock, do you go searching around town trying to get it then? You probably wait until they have it in stock and in the mean time, you eat something else. I'm "eating" 22LR these days because I have quite a bit in my cache (at least the common stuff versus target grade). And, yes, I planned for this shortage and stocked up and have been stocking up for years.

I imagine some of these tactical shooting classes that require about 1000 rounds of ammunition on hand to take the class are suffering these days. If I had 1000 rounds of 9mm, I certainly wouldn't blast it away in two or three days.

Rim, you sound like a person who is well stocked. Its no "big deal" for you but some of us are new to this. I had zero ammo and zero firearms on Feb 1st of this year. Put yourself in my shoes for a minute...i cant go "eat something else"

Guess I would be doing what you're doing. :D

I am well stocked with 22 rimfire ammunition. Have "enough" of the centerfire that I shoot, but I could use more of that and as a result, I ration it a bit at the range. If I would nomally shoot 50 rounds, I'll shoot half that at most or shoot some and switch to 22LR. I have not been selling 22 ammunition. I have no interest in that other than to help someone out locally given the opportunity.

Colonel, when we get past this shortage, start buying at a rate of 2 to 1 shot and your inventory will grow. Get it to a comfortable level to you and then go 1:1 until you have urge to increase the cache.

I don't mean to come off (snobby or something akin to that) like I have all that I want. Probably have all that I need for the time being as long as this shortage ends in a few months at least for centerfire ammunition. Unlike you, I have been shooting for years and I like certain guns and certain calibers more, but I have a pretty good selection to choose from. For example, 41 mag factory ammunition is often hard to find and I buy it when I see it and buy 10 boxes at a time online from time to time. I have well over 1000 rounds in house. It is one of the centerfire calibers I really like to shoot. Don't shoot much 357 mag. Do shoot a fair amount of 40 S&W and I keep a mix available at my house.

The whole goal with stocking up was not to build up a cache to brag about or to tell people like yourself (too bad or whatever), but so I don't feel like I have to run to the store just to go shooting even when retail inventories were good. That is where it starts... then it grows especially in the case of 22LR because I'll shoot 3 or 4 different brands in a day and started buying in case and half case lots with that stuff. I like Federal Lightning (510B) for everyday shooting... and Walmart sells or did sell it. I'd pick up 1000 rounds just about every time I visited a Walmart and that is often once a week for groceries and so forth. Lots of Walmart stores around where I live. I seldom shoot 1000 rounds of 22LR in a week of any variety. So the pile grows very quickly and one day you inventory and are amazed just how much you have lying around in closets, cabinets, drawers, ammo boxes, and so forth.

Well that may be fine for you as you can do other things but as someone who has to use a walker to get around its not. Shooting is a very friendly sport for those of us with mobility problems. I can't go hiking anymore, camping, play softball or other sports I use to do but I can go shooting. I can do benchrest, shotgun even certain pistol matches. So yea it is a "BIG DEAL" to me.

Queen, I would be more than happy to help you out if you lived near me at regular prices on stuff I have. I'm glad you enjoy shooting. It's a great sport and hobby, but it is not an inexpensive pursuit. I wish you well in your quest for ammunition.

I hear u rim. No harm done.

Fyi everyone. Ive been to two walmarts today just to see whats around (my wife has me on the dont buy anymore ammo list after last nite) and they both had oodles of 40 and 45. I think this thing may be unraveling a bit. Around here anywho

I have visited the Huntsville AL Walmarts. Glad to hear that they have some handgun ammo in stock.

Walmarts are one of the places I look for beforehand when I do out of town jobs. The usual first day is to go to job site and start, then on the way back to the motel hit Walmart for snacks and other munchies. Visits to Sams Club, Lowes, or Home Depot are also usually a priority. I also check for banks to see where the closest bank that I do business with is just in case I need cash. I'm sort of anti-ATM.

Last Friday i was at my local Academy. The hunting ammo shelves were fully stocked with rifle , shotgun and odd handgun ammos. No .22 LRs , .357 s , .22 Mag , .17HMRs, etc.

Today Academy received a case of AE 100 round count boxes of 5.56 and a case of Indepndance 20 round boxes of 5.56. This is the first 223/556 we've seen in some time. Two boxes of 500 count UMC 45ACP was available. Some Hornady 308 and 3 cans of CCI 22lr completed Academys offering. Number of people in line exceded 30 today. A longer than normal line for a Monday. Three families showed up to buy ammo.

I'd had some luck at Academy earlier this year -- lined up with some friendly folks before opening who knew the drill and approached the ammo counter in an orderly fashion when the doors opened.

Thought I'd try again a few weeks ago, but the rules had changed.

As I walked up to the only shopper at the door 90-minutes before opening, I was informed that I was not second in line but that there were a dozen other folks sitting in their cars in the parking lot who were ahead of me. Seems it's the same bunch every M-W-F and they've organized this system to the exclusion of others.

Also, I had a truly cordial chat with a regional ammo manufacturer that takes orders and sells to walk-in customers. The shipping time is understandably a number of months, and the walk-in purchases are limited to try to be fair -- but generally a shooter brings a van-load of kinfolk with a shopping list and buys everything that's now in demand as soon as the doors open.

And I've seen first-hand that local gun shops and ranges have also organized to buy ammo from the big box stores to have ammo available for their customers.

Yep, the competition to buy available ammo is significant. It's tough for those caught short-handed. I don't have a stockpile, but I'm thankful that I can keep shooting pistol matches and take new shooters out for their first handgun experience with a variety of calibers -- without having to buy in this market.

I'm thinking there could be some problems arise from that. AFIAC, if you are not in line, you are not in line. I don't really care what the only other guy in line has to say, if I am behind him, I'm second. You can get behind me. And if you try to move me out of my rightful place, that is assault, and the monkey dance begins.
