I went to a LGS and there was a surprising number of guns there, even though their website showed almost nothing. I asked the owner about that, and he said that the website is their supplier, who has nothing. I asked what happens when his own inventory runs out, and he said, "Then that's it!"

I then went to Scheels, which has a dwindling supply of every kind of gun, and very little (and high priced) ammo. I've noticed that they keep removing shelves, probably as a way to not have so many bare shelves that highlight how little they have. I asked the salesman about ordering something they don't have, and he said they aren't taking any orders for guns. What's on the shelves is all that can be bought.

Well, I was under the impression that the empty shelves at the stores was due to people buying up what was there and special orders going straight to the people without landing on the shelves first. Now I discover that it's because gun stores can't even take orders OR put anything on shelves because they can't even order anything. But wait! Aren't the manufacturers still manufacturing guns as fast as they can for people who want to buy them? If not, why not?

This is a very good question. I want to order two different guns, but no one will take the order. I backordered a bunch of bullets about 6 months ago....nothing yet. Primers? Forget it. Not taking gun orders is indeed a puzzle, but in my mind is evidence of us living in very dark times. It is way more complicated than a simple supply and demand issue.

Guns are no doubt in short supply, but I haven't noticed it get any worse than it was six months ago. In general my LGS has always kept a decent stock of guns through this whole deal, and I haven't had many issues getting what I want in the last year, with a little patience of course.

Nothing new. I've been told for months by all my LGS' that I frequent that they can't order anything specific. They get what they are sent and that's it. They get called and ask if they want this ammo and these guns, nothing more.

Our LGS has guns and ammo trickling in every week. Said that it was backorders from last fall. Even got a little powder in last week, but still no primers, bullets or brass.

The shelves/racks around here are starting to fill back up

Here too. Guns have been available for a while. At least certain guns. Some are still hard go come by. Ammo IS being delivered. It is just selling quick. I was in one local gun shop last week and he had a few boxes of most ammo, but no 9mm. When I asked he told me that a pallet of 9mm ammo had been unloaded at 9AM. It was sold out buy noon @ $28/box.

It was interesting at a local shop the other day I stopped in to buy some mags.

They are a big Sig dealer and normally, even when the mania was highest, have a ton of 320s, Legions and 365s. This time they had two "LEO only" 320s, no 365s and a couple used 229s. That was it. Shocking for that place.

Of course they had a few Wilson's, some nice CZ Shadows and a whole pile of Shadow System 920s, even a few Zevs (and they don't stock Glock) so it's not like the shelves were bare at all, but seeing no 320s there was surprising to say the least

We are awash in generic black plastic pistols and Turkish shotguns around here, but nothing interesting to be seen. Ammo isnt hard to find, but too expensive to actually buy in volume.

That's something else I noticed when I was at Scheels. The pump shotguns are no longer Mossberg or Remington, but names I've never heard of, and they feel like cheap toys. Prices for them aren't very low either, but I guess it's a way to keep something on the shelf.

I ask my local gun guy to order a Ruger 10/22 carbine back in early January. Never got any in but I found another shop that had 5-6 Rugers in the rack. Picked one up yesterday for less than the cost to order. LGS said they didn't have a lot of control on what or when stock arrives. Ammo seems to be more available but prices remain high.

My indoor range, which is also a gun shop, has new firearm inventory coming in. No luck on ammo, though. What little they get they keep in back for people who buy new guns.

Several gun stores have guns but ammo is limited IF available - except TODAY. Academy had 6 types of 9mm, some 40 and others. limits of 2 boxes per day so hopefully that will stop the scalpers

My Son owns a shop , supplies are coming slowly .Most of the challenge is spending endless amounts of time on the internet trying to locate things . He used to buy through 4 or 5 suppliers for his stuff , now it's more like 10-12 and prices are climbing fast .

My closest LGS is starting to refill the duty auto case. Not much in the way of compact carry guns. The DA revolver case is very picked over, only 6" guns or .22s. Mid-frame duty 4" are unavailable. Only one snub- an older 940 priced accordingly. The single action revolver case is reasonably full.

Last summer my goto lgs wasn't able to special order any guns but they have managed to keep some inventory coming in. Ammo is another story. Some of us sold some back so they would have something to trickle out on the shelves.

To me it seems we are starting to be an uptick in supply of both firearms and ammo. I was at my LGS today and was able to buy 160 rounds of 7.62x39 where the last few month you could only buy 40 rounds at a time. The salesman said that they were starting to get more coming in. They also had a very good selection of firearms. It was more long guns that handguns but still a decent selection of both. Now reloading supplies is a different story at least locally. There are however more stories of people finding primers and powder online.

I also think we're starting to uptick. Very early and very slowly. But I'm starting to feel some fresh air wafting my way from the end of the tunnel, if I can't actually see the light, yet.

LGS are unwilling to order with a 50% deposit or even paid in full in advance?
I can believe it. It the same with contractors and building materials. Empty shelves at suppliers has them hesistant to even make bids. Add in huge price increases in lumber and steel and buisness stops,

Several years ago the owner of the LGS that I frequented would spend most of his days on the phone with his suppliers trying to find guns, AR's in particular. When he would finally get a human he would ask if they had any AR's if they said yes he would immediately request a certain number. He said if you asked questions like price, brand, caliber etc they would be gone. You got what you got. On several occasions I saw customers walk in and ask if he had any AR's. If he did they would just buy, no questions or anything just paid the bill. Strange times indeed.
