I've seen several 'shortage' threads lately, but I haven't personally noted anything out of the ordinary.

But now comes a reliable, interesting story that Ruger has stopped, or is about to stop, accepting new orders for guns for some period (model(s) not specified) because they cannot keep up with current demand.

I'd like to know which models are affected, my bet is on the inexpensive handgun lines.

Pre-election jitters. Two local gunships have had problems getting a lot of different guns so I don't think it's unique to Ruger.

Sometimes this happens with a popular product, in high demand, but not enough people to keep up. Visit Milt Sparks' (another popular product - in this case, holsters - in high demand) website and you will find they do the same thing from time to time.

Talked to a regional Ruger rep yesterday and they said their 9mm 1911 has sold faster than they can make them. They just added a new production line to try and keep up with demands for their guns and it cost them about 3.2 million for the machinery.

Maybe they will hire extra people to keep up with the demand?

I can completely understand halting orders after a certain threshold is reached. Supporting long drawn out orders on items not even built yet will ultimately require some degree of personnel shift in the minimum. Additionally, the company has to deal with suppliers of contract parts, raw materials, tooling, energy and the like. Given the shaky ground so much of the world's economy is on, a company would be foolish to run too long a waiting list (especially if purchase price is guaranteed) these days. Then there's the effect of fickle customers canceling unpaid orders or demanding the return of funds on paid orders.

Keep in mind that you really have few options as a manufacturer with extended order lists:
Someone stops what they're doing to address queries and efficiency suffers.
Someone new is hired to address queries and pricing suffers.
    The customer/dealer feels ignored/lied to.
The manufacturer develops a reputation as being insufficiently communicative.

From my personal point of view. the "I've been waiting ***** for the gun I ordered" scenario is very different from the "I still haven't found the gun I want in stock anywhere" scenario.

Just look at how unreasonable some of the customer expectations posted in the last couple months here on THR are - now imagine the perception of a "promise" that comes along with an order being formally and professionally taken.

Oh, and save the Randall Knives model or others like it as the "custom" world is very, very different from standard manufacturing and knives along with other goods are not susceptible to the varying political whims as are firearms.

One reason is due to the beginning of the year Ruger promotions...order 10 of "these" get one free. We just got our shipment of SR22s, eleven of them and after three days, have four left. Same with 10-22s. We're still hoping on the 1911s and SP 22s. Can't even get the old P95s right now.
If you think that is bad, try Kimber...we've got orders for sixty Solos and have only received five in the past year...and we're master dealers.

i would bet they will stop the 1911 due to they are way behind on orders as it is..its a very popular gun and everybody wants one..but on the other hand they may stop the on the other weapons to catch up on 1911s and be able to keep up with demand

Ruger ran/is running a bunch of dealer promos that turned out to be way more popular than expected. Within the first week after the start of the program, every distributor was sold out of almost every model, with backorders months out at this point.

One of my Ruger contacts said a month or so back that they're hiring a hundred new people.
    That should help.

Ruger Temporarily Suspends Acceptance of New Orders...

Chief Executive Officer Michael O. Fifer made the following comments:

    • The Company's Retailer Programs that were offered from January 1, 2012 through February 29, 2012 were very successful and generated significant orders from retailers to independent wholesale distributors for Ruger firearms.

    • Year-to-date, the independent wholesale distributors placed orders with the Company for more than one million Ruger firearms.

    • Despite the Company's continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders. Consequently, the Company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders.

    • The Company expects to resume the normal acceptance of orders by the end of May 2012.

My local range and FFL as well say it's election panic-buying setting in. I for one agree with them as people are extremely leary of the 11/06/12 potential results:uhoh:.

Glad that business is booming. I know the firearm industry is going strong in this economy, that helps I guess. :)

Not this pre-election crud again. Oh well got my Stag...and a lot of ammo...and just got 2 bricks of CCI Standard Velocity from my brand spanking new (Tuesday) 22" bbl Ruger 10/22 sporter.

So I will be weathering the election pretty well.

Bet the Ruger SR22 will follow soon after the 1911; I spent 2 months looking for one...gun shows, local shops, large regional stores (Cabelas). Didn't care what the cost was, as long as it was manufacturers price or lower. Only saw one, in another state, and wasn't ready to have one shipped to my FFL. Finally got lucky last weekend.

One million new orders is a lot of Rugers. No wonder they're behind.

I may have been wrong on the 9mm part, but he definitely said the 1911 production was backed up. He also said their NRA one dollar per gun program had been exceeded and was upped to 1.2 million matching for the final month to two months they have left of the year time span they laid out last year.

What do you know, the Big O actually managed to stimulate the economy after all! And, after spending all our tax dollars plus a bunch, here we find out all he needed to do was spend his campaign funds.
