So I've recently came across this page while in the middle of a "nobody NEEDS an AR15" discussion on Facebook, and found it incredibly helpful...
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10tbl20.xls
I'm sure many of you have seen it, but just in case any of you have not, here it is. I don't know if this is the type of material that belongs in "General Gun Discussions", but I think it's fairly good information.

Total Murders: 12,996
Total Murders Committed with a Firearm: 8,775 67.52%
-------------Rifle: 358 4.1% 2.75%
-------------Shotgun: 373 4.3% 2.87%
-------------Handgun: 6,009 68.48% 46.24%
-------------Unknown Firearm: 2,035 23.19% 15.67%
Knives: 1,704 13.11%
Other Weapons: 1,772 13.63%
Hands/Feet/Fists: 745 5.73%
Percent of Total Murders
Percent of Total Murders Committed with a Firearm

So rifles and shotguns combined were used in less murders than hands/feet/fists. Watch out, guys.... the anti's will be after those next. :neener:

Looks like they might go after handguns with that info, good thing i have my SBR's in order for carry.

We need to enact common sense laws banning the teaching of hand to hand combat techniques. These martial arts were developed for war and have no place on our streets.

Finally! Some reasonable legislation!

Well since statistics don't matter to them, I doubt that. lol

Guys I could be in real trouble. I can kill by all of those means. Where do I turn myself in? I must be a criminal.

Well hell, why don't we just ban everything that we don't need? That includes CNN or MSNBC since nobody needs to watch the news.

Nobody needs an AR15 to kill with, period.

Worst recent multiple murderer in my home town only needed a knife and a baseball bat to committ three murders.

I don't see ARs or AKs "on the streets"; I see them at the vintage and modern military matches at the local gun club. I see them at civilian marksmanship programs at the gun club. The recent newsletter has photos of firearms classes for women and kids, with ARs quite popular.

I honestly to not believe that a AWB making felons out of me or the guys and gals I shoot with would really make "the streets" safer.

I do not stick my nose into what other people want and tell them they don't need that and they ought to be felonized and prosecuted facing a possible 10 year federal felon sentence with $100,000 fine based on some vague definition of something they have that I don't think they need.

I think we need to turn this argument on its ear - and I'm surprised that nobody takes this approach. It isn't about whether anyone "needs" or "wants" an AR15 or not.
1. Hey, why don't we change the 18th Amendment? I don't drink and far more people are killed by drunk drivers each year than guns. Let's make some changes there. Nobody needs more than one beer or one glass of wine. After all, NY has a limit on the amount of carbonated sugary drinks you can buy - why not booze?
2. What about the 13th Amendment? Should we make a change there? This is the amendment that ended slavery.
3. What about the 19th Amendment? This gave women the right to vote - actually equal rights, not just voting.
Of course, I'm saying these to make a point. I don't want to change any of them - and that is the point. We don't change these because they are unchangeable rights we all enjoy. It isn't a matter of whether I prefer one right over the other. I don't drink, I'm not a minority, and I'm not a female - none of these "directly affect" me, however, I wouldn't dream of imposing changes on others. The truth is that there would be an indirect effect on me if any of these were changed - just as there will be an indirect effect to all if they change the second amendment.
They (dems) have made the argument about guns and this is not what we should be arguing. Just my opinion.

Here's something interesting. CA has the highest number of murders with a rifle in the nation (59). How long have they had a state AWB?

Texas has the highest number of murders with hands/feet in the nation (109). This is a state with some of the least restrictive gun laws.

Looking at these stats state by state, I think I'm moving to Vermont.

Nobody needs a vehicle with more horsepower than it takes to get to the speed limit either. Speed kills!

DMK: I think we need to look at percentage of overall population in the state, not just raw numbers.

I seem to recall hearing that the percentage of homicides by baseball bats is higher than firearms. I don't see bats on this table - would that fall into one of the other weapons categories (making the stat that I heard false) or is that shown on a different table?

Thanks,

Dale

I don't believe that is strictly true; it would be more accurate to say that bludgeoning weapons killed more people than assault weapons.

Solo, that sounds more like it. Even still, where would those stats come from? I don't see that on Table 20.

Also, I am assuming these stats are only murders (as it would seem), not include self-defense.

Interesting chart

Anyone notice that "Other Weapons" is higher than Rifle in almost every state. I would like to see it broke down even farther because I would bet that most of the rifle stats aren't ARs or AKs but more likely bolt and lever rifles.

I would also like to find a chart that is adjusted for population. States like California and New York have big numbers but also big populations. The ones that stand out to me are DC and Illinois. DC has more murder than many states especially if you adjust for population. I would also like to see what percentage of Illinois' numbers is from the Chicago area. Those are the cities with the strictest gun laws are in place, and also the worst murder rates. That is the argument that I love throwing in a Liberal's face.

mldeckard, that is true. However, a while ago they were trying to take "just the evil handguns. You can keep everything else." Now they are saying the same thing about "assault weapons." Bringing up the disparity between handgun and rifles shows the hypocrisy in their reasoning. To truly be consistent they should want to ban EVERY gun. If we can demonstrate that this is the ONLY viable position for the liberals, we've made a huge step in the right direction because very few regular citizens want to ban everything and would heartily revolt at such a notion.

The press doesn't "NEED" the internet or television to spread the news. When the founding fathers drafted the First Amendment, news was spread by with printing presses and newspapers. So that is all that the founding fathers were considering when they drafted the First Amendment.

Yes, you are right. Although I am sure there are plenty of "useful idiots" who really think disarming everyone really does make society safer.

You don't NEED a car either.

If no one had car, there'd be no drunk driving, which probably kills more than any hand-held tool "designed for killing." No more car accidents in bad weather either...

I think you guys are all missing the point: cars, tvs, and many other things CAN be dangerous. The difference is that guns were designed to KILL - especially assault weapons! ;)

Never mind the fact that, designed to kill or not, cars kill way more people than guns.

They can have my cold hands and feet when I am dead, not a minute before.
