Viewers robbed after fireworks
Young men wielding baseball bats injure 10 near Boulevard Bridge

An evening of fun, family and fireworks took a violent turn just
after the last sparks above Dogwood Dell fell from the air.

Ten people who had watched the July Fourth fireworks display from the
boulder-strewn banks below the Boulevard Bridge were robbed and
beaten by a group of baseball bat-wielding young men. The assailants
demanded the victims' wallets, purses, cell phones and other
valuables, Richmond police said.

"It's the Fourth of July. We're celebrating our freedom, and then
this happens," said one woman who witnessed the attacks and who would
identify herself only as Karen, 30, of Richmond. "It was terrifying."

Richmond police confirmed that four of the 10 robbery victims were
injured, but authorities would not comment on those injuries. One
man, who identified himself as Stavros, said he had to be rescued by
boat from a rock in the middle of the river after fleeing from a man
with a bat.

The attacks began about 9:45 p.m. on the James River near Westover
Hills Boulevard and Riverside Drive. There, about 30 people had
gathered to watch the fireworks. When the show ended, they packed up
to leave.

"Then we heard something fall very close to us. It was these huge
stones, and we thought someone was throwing them off the bridge above
us," Karen said. "We yelled, "Hey, there's people down here. Stop
throwing things.'"

That's when a group of 15 to 20 young men in dark pants and white
T-shirts came down to the river's edge. Some carried baseball bats,
Karen said. Police confirmed that the men used baseball bats and
40-ounce beer bottles as weapons.

She and her friend hid until they had a chance to run to safety.

Stavros, 20, of Richmond used his backpack to shield himself from the
rocks. When the group of young men emerged, he and several other
people huddled for cover behind a large rock.

"Then I saw two people approaching us, and I saw something large and
metallic in one guy's hand," he said, and he thought it was a knife
or bat. "I told people we were going to have to jump in the river. As
soon as I realized they weren't just robbing us, I jumped in the
river and started swimming."

He later learned that people who stayed near shore were hit with aluminum bats.

Stavros clung to a rock in the middle of the river. Because he didn't
know if the attackers had guns, he said, "I was really worried that I
was going to get shot at because I was a pretty visible target."

After about 30 minutes, a Richmond fire department dive team
responding to a 911 call from one of the victims rescued him by boat.

After the attacks, police and rescue workers searched for the men
involved in the robberies and assaults. All the assailants were
between 15 and 20 years old, according to police. No arrests have
been made, Richmond police said yesterday, but authorities continue
to investigate.

"It was the perfect place to watch the fireworks until this," Karen
said. "It just doesn't make any sense."

Okay... so, if these guys were found, why no arrests? And if not, how do they know the assailants ages so precisely? I'm guessing the authorities didn't actually find anyone yet?

If there was a CCW there, the liberal media would just make them out to be more poor, misunderstood, disadvantaged bat and knife wielding 'children' killed by gunfire.

I gotta get the XD 45 added to the permit. Loaded + 2 mags = 40 rounds. Oh yea! :D

One person with a CCW, and we wouldn't have had to read that.

I believe that's true - even one person with a revolver would've probably stopped it. Having less rounds than attackers just makes them decide who'll be first!

How could something like that happen in VA? Those are things I expect to see in WI or IL but not in a gun friendly state like VA.

Yet another example of why it is crucial to be armed these days - not just armed, but armed with a gun.

This also demonstrates with undeniable clarity why the antigun bigots are dead wrong. Where were the police when these people needed protecting?

People in WI are generally better behaved:D

Gun friendly state does not equal everybody (or even a large minority) has and uses CCW.

I don't alway carry when I'm running errands to Home Depot or Walmart. OTOH, you will never catch me in a large group w/o a snubbie. State/county fairs, fireworks displays, and like events are fun, but magnets for drunken bubbas, and other degenerate 'utes who would cause mayhem.

You have the freedom to carry and YOU are responsible for your own safety.

Quick responce time too, I'll bet that 30 minutes seemed like hours and hours.

If someone had shot one of the critters, the anti gun folks would be decrying the use of unequal force. Instead, the persons being attacked should have devoted 10-15 years of their lives, from a very young age, to getting black belts (itself a violent activity... but that seems to be ignored) so that they can simply take the bats away from the youths and humiliate them before sending them on their way.

Forget what the media says. Who the hell are they? Worry about what happens in the court room. But if you killed one of those bat-armed "children" in self defense, well it's self-defense! Case closed, go home, chill out, have a snack, read a gun magazine.

Whining about it does not make it any better. Everyone has a choice to make when confronted. Take your beating from the punk with the bat, or defend yourself. We can choose to be victims, or not. It is hard to sympathize with those that allow themselves to be some gang bangers plaything.

Not true at all. The media reaction would be simply to ignore the story. Period. Had some licensed individual drawn down on these punks and/or shot one then 1) the attack would have been much smaller (as the cockroaches would scatter on the first shot) thus making it less news worthy and 2) the only media coverage would be local (or the news reports would not say it was a "civilian" but would imply that it was a police officer that did the shooting ... they have done that TONS of times).

There are somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 million self defensive uses of firearms every year that the national media largely ignores.

Thats why you need to add this link to your daily rotation of reading material
http://claytoncramer.com/gundefenseblog/blogger.html It'll make you feel a little better :D

Side note: many states don't allow CCW licensees to carry at "public gatherings".

Sounds like it's time for a Tactical Baseball Bat. :D

I agree, The media will shy away from a story about guns used in self defense.

You can also read about guns used in self defense here

I also post a few on my messageboard.

The gun grabbers will never admit that there is a legitimate use for a firearm.
