Non-Trendy EDC

Inspired by the recent “Wood And Steel” carry thread, here’s a slightly different take on it… who here carries something that doesn’t necessarily fall unto today’s “status quo” of “polymer automatic carry” ?

I’ll kick it off… I’ve carried everything from a Zastava M70 (.32) to a Bulgarian Makarov (9x18) and currently a refurbed Beretta 1934 and LNIB Colt Junior on the daily.

Carried a 1911 Gov’t once, for *two days* (it went down the road for reasons besides size/weight); and a 3” S&W pre-M10… went to a guy wanted it more than me.

I’ve never met a gun I didn’t like, but those I’ve sent down the road simply didn’t suit my needs at the time. I’d like to reacquire everything I’ve ever gotten rid of… don’t we all ?

I’ve always liked carrying older or less common guns. Right now, I’m rotating a vintage Colt Detective Special in .38 Special and a small Walther PPK/s in .380. Both are reliable but definitely not the usual “polymer carry” options. The Detective Special is a bit heavier, but there's something about the feel and smoothness of it that makes it worth carrying. I’ve had a few others along the way, like an old Webley Mk IV, which was just a fun and unique piece, but I eventually passed it on.

There’s just something about carrying a classic. Not always the most practical for the times, but it sure feels good in hand.

My primary carry for quite a while now has been my S&W 442-1. I got this for my birthday in 1997.
I have carried other guns, but this one always seems to come back to the role of my main CCW. Even when I lived in places where carrying was forbidden or jobs that wouldn’t allow it, this revolver has been with me in my vehicle or motorcycle or backpack.

Looks great for an almost 30yo carry gun!

In addition to an IWB pistol I almost always have a 442 or K6xs in my pocket. Sometimes I (gasp) have only the revolver when circumstances require. For the premise of this thread, I enjoy non-status-quo firearms, but for carry in the 2020's the more modern offerings serve me better than the older generations. If it were the 1990s I'd be quite happy with whatever was best for me personally at the time, also.

I'm shocked to find that my current EDC pistol is 4 years old with close to 1500 rounds through it. It's probably considered trendy being what it is, but it works for me.

Snubbies are trending due to the new releases from SW and Ruger and the resurgence of the 32s. Also, there are now major trainers offering snub classes and snub oriented conference type events for the serious training junkies. As far as carrying, said it so many times, J frames when dress and locale make one the best choice. Add some training and practice, so good to go. The 32 is the best compromise, 6 shoots, not 5, easy to shoot choices of ammo or some real powerhouses.

When I'm out in the woods, on the tractor, or just working around the farm, I often carry my CZ52 or my FEG .32acp (7.65 Browning). Both hold 8rds. I'd probably carry that FEG more if .32acp wasn't so expensive and a pain to reload.
That CZ is one of the most accurate pistols I've ever shot. A lot of folks aren't fmiliar with the 7.62x25 and don’t know that it can be loaded pretty close to 7.5 FK velocities, albeit with a little lighter bullet. Good factory 7.62x25 ammo is about 1700-1800fps with an 85gr bullet. I don't carry it out in public as my EDC much just due to it's size and over penetration concerns.

I don't know if they're trendy or not, but I have always felt adequately armed with a S&W J frame in .38 Special.

I would think the "Non-Trendy" guns would be the full size guns. All those little backup guns are all the trend these days. :)

This is one of my old "non-trendy" guns back in the day. The trendy one at the time was on my belt on the other side.

While trends change, Ive just plodded along with what Ive known best for about five decades now and never worried if I was one of the "mod kids". Its been a full size primary, with a compact/subcompact as a backup when needed all along.

Heres the current iteration.

Not trendy at all. In fact with all the plastic pocket guns nowadays this is prolly considered fashionably outdated. However it has ridden many miles as a third gun on duty and close to as many as a second off duty.

Here are pictures of guns that at one time or another ridden in my pocket or on my belt as a SD carry gun. All except the NAA Mini revolver and thats because I just got it and it hasn't been tested yet. My most carried is the 442. The second most carried is the Beretta 950 in 25acp. The left hand row is 32 caliber and the Beretta on the bottom and the right hand is 38s and 357 SP-101. Not much wood but all steel. The 3" gun on the right side is a S&W model 36-6 38 special. S&W only made 615 of this model. I only have the gun and not the box and docs. Its one of my favorite trail guns.

Oops! I posted this in the wrong thread. I thought I was posting in the thread started by "Styx" called "anyone still EDC metal and wood?"

Oh well, I guess it fits here too. So I hope you like it. Twice.
