Not again.......! Feral Hog Control in East Texas

Hey hope you and the missus are doing ok. Looks like you’re getting hammered by Laura. Give us an update when you can. Prayers sent to all of you down there and in Louisiana. This is going to be a devastating storm.

Appreciate the prayers. It's coming through our area right now. No doubt will be without power soon, so will report back when it's all over.

Take care, all.

A couple of days ago at one of the hog bait sites....I dumped about 1/2 a bag of Dry Dog Food on the ground along with the corn I normally put out.

This same area gets various table scraps and expired food products on a fairly regular basis. Over the years I've discovered what the hogs will and won't eat. I really didn't know if they would eat the dog food or not...thinking that raccoons and possum would likely get it first.

I pulled the card on the game camera there today and got my answer:

Update:

Well Hurricane Laura sped through our area about mid-morning today and thankfully stayed enough East of us to spare us any significant damage. Our neighbors to the East (Louisiana) unfortunately were not as lucky. We are simply without power (running generators as I write this), many of them are without homes and in some cases without their loved ones. Four precious souls were lost in the storm. My heart and my prayers go out to them.

My thanks to those who showed concern for me and my family, it means a lot to me. We are fine and clean up around here will not be difficult.

Flint.

I'm North and West of you, southern border and west of 271 in Camp County. I only got 0.1" of rain out of it. Laura turned east well before it got near me. We needed the rain too. More wind than anything but nothing over 35mph.

Glad your ok and hopefully they will get your powered restored soon.

Had a heard of 20 hogs come through last night on my feeder. This is the first time I've seen them in months, except for a lone bore I took out a couple of weeks ago. Jut got through setting up my video cameras to wake me up when them come back through tonight, if they do. All around 100 lbs with a larger sow in the group.

I should have either buried the thresholds or added some fake ones to the cattle panel I had in place around the feeder before I moved the trap.

Did have 5 in there for about 40 min last night but the larger ones stayed out. One ate up to the door but never went in.

Going to take a few more days I guess.

The deer are staying in the trap throughout the day and are consuming hats being thrown.

So just getting a quick pecking and moving on.

The sows just keep on walking past. Going to add at least 50 lbs of corn on the ground to the equation tomorrow and see what happens.

Maybe set the feeders to throw later and a bit longer as well.

That agrees with what happens to the carcasses here as well. The buzzards and coyotes will strip them to the bone in less than 24 hrs. Then the coyotes come back and eat the rib bones first...then carry off the leg and shoulder bones. Except for the skull, hide and vertebrae scattered around, you wouldn't know there was ever a hog there. Even the hooves are eaten.

I like the ribs best too. :)

I was headed down to my shop just awhile ago and happened to look out into the pasture behind my house. Spotted a group of 7 pigs rooting up the ground about 200 yards out. Dirt and grass flying two feet into the air. So I high tailed it back to the house, grabbed the 7mm-08 and told the Wifey to please keep our two Dachshunds in the house for a minute....that I was going out on the back porch.

The hogs weren't far out in the pasture....so only one shot would be possible before the others would make it to cover. They were all about the same size (140-ish) so the first one to turn sideways was selected. As anticipated....all the others beat a hasty retreat and no second shot opportunity presented itself. But at least one more is gone. Man....do they tear things up fast!

I had a few little guys show up on my camera a few days ago. Bottom of the feeder spinner is 44 inches. I’m going to go see about them Thursday evening. But I don’t really have any reservations about success. These guys don’t this big by being dumb. But the place is full of pigs. No one has kept them in check this year because of CoVid. Not one hog trapped that I know of. Last year they trapped over 250. One boar shot that was over 400lbs.would sure like to find out what these guys weigh...

Those are some 'big boys' for sure. But ANY hog you can get out of the population is a success. Wishing you the best of luck.

I think that was a record last night, I don’t think I have seen anything stay in a trap that long that wasn’t activated, they mulled around for over an hour. Still just the two though.

Flintnapper glad you are safe. Just dropping a line. I still the threads about the hogs. I have not hunted any yet. Good hunting and take care.

Thought I had this group 'Run Off' after having shot the two adults out of the gang. But they are back!

Those orphaned pigs are pretty easy to kill. i like #3 or 4 buckshot at 30-40 yards. Once killed seven smaller pigs at one shot.

Read the article at the link. It's another "your government will take care of the wild hog problem" piece. Yep, simply stop shooting and trapping wild hogs and the government will soon make wild hogs extinct. The states and the federal government have failed miserably in the management of wild hogs. Hogs are wising up; in a few areas wild hogs are refusing to break cover and run when the helicopter comes over.

Oklahoma, especially along the Red River, is infested with wild hogs. A large landowner i met hired a trapper who took 1,500 wild hogs off a 1.5 mile mile stretch north of the Red River in one month. Within weeks there were as many hogs as ever.

Our property in Garvin county, OK has a wild hog problem. i've managed to keep the population down by killing little pigs at feeders. Dead pigs don't become pesky hogs.

Unfortunately, I think it’s better to just move to another location than wait for them to come back to a kill spot.

It’s about an hours work but we moved it Sunday and they are already testing the waters.
