I think I can say with almost certainty that your revolver was made between 1917 and 1929 by the plain checkered grips and mushroom ejector knob. In fact, I believe we can state it was made between 1927 and 1930. The Texas State Prison system procured guns during that time period, and their serial numbers range from 500000 to 630000. Your serial falls within that range as well.

It's a nice revolver you have there. This one is #5446XX. I approximated it's date in the same manner.

A M&P serial 679000 was shipped in July of 1939. Shows the effect of the Great Depression on gun sales. S&W sold 130,000 K frames between 1927 and 1930 and in the next nine years sold only 49,000. That's about 40% of the sales volume in 300% the time span. I bet the bulk of the sales in that 1927-30 period were before 1930, too. I bet sales plummeted after October of 1929.

Big Jon,

Very nice M&P, and nice taste in cigars too :D . Sounds like your old wheel gun has been a good hunting partner, and I hope it continues to have many succesful trips with you.
