Not your gunfight, but you get involved anyway

If you read the Wiki article (did you?) you saw all sides presented.

As far as conflict resolution goes, "numbers" of people disagreeing with you has no bearing on right or wrong...
though it is a popular measure these days in the brace new work of YouTube/TikTok "Influencers."

But as far as 'deciding' goes it has been a life's works to make a decision in the face of conflicting data -- even conflicting people.

KG remains the classic case -- studied in any number of academic and decision-making settings -- of "I didn't want to get involved..." and it will remain so as long as there are people who were old enough to have actually read the morning/week-after headlines when it happened.

post script: Did the Gentle Readers get to the part noting not thirty-eight... but apparently 49 people who were eventually recorded as witnesses of some aspect of the incident?

....and again 10 years later:

Even if the Kitty Genovese story were true as reported, it's about people who ignored the attack and didn't call the cops. Multiple neighbors called the cops on this guy. If I remember correctly from the video, six officers were responding to the original call, and the dispatcher said they had multiple calls about the incident.

Speaking as a currently employed rural cop, God bless those armed citizens for helping out a fellow human being in great need.

Being all alone out there going to some of the things we as LE respond to can be sketchy. Some of us have young kids to come home to as well.

Sometimes one has to stop thinking about being sued and just go and do what’s right. Hell, that’s where us cops are at today as well.

You pays your money and takes your chances.

I recall a case here in Florida many years past where a pair of deer hunters were taking a break near an interstate hwy.....a Florida Highway Patrolman stopped a vehicle near their lunch spot and was shot by the driver, as I recall he survived the shoot, but both of those hunters opened up on that shooter with their rifles. Don't recall if they killed him, but they darn sure put him down.

Incidentally, I understand the FHP bought each of those fellows a new rifle as a thank you.

Right thing to do, wrong thing to do........depends on the circumstances, the locale and one's ability. I put well over 30 plus years on the streets in a very active area and for one I can say I truly appreciate the assists I received.

Indeed and concur 100%.

I do know in my circumstance I would not take a chance shooting across, along, above, or near an interstate highway with a rifle to help a total stranger about whom I know nothing and have zero relationship. Glad that it ultimately worked out well for the two Florida hunters enjoying their lunch that fateful day.

Two neighbors retrieved their own firearms to go to the aid of two deputies who'd just taken shotgun wounds to the head (both in danger of losing their eyesight). Shot at the suspect to (apparently) allow other neighbors to drag the injured deputies to safety into a nearby garage until additional responders arrived.

Any thoughts? This one seems to have worked out well. The deputies were well-known in the neighborhood, and one of the two residents that came to their aid apparently had some combat experience (military).

I Am the militia.

Clear enough.
