Hi All,
I was wondering what to look for when buying a rifle. I'm an ex-Marine looking to purchase an A-2. I've been dying to shoot ever since I left way back in 1989. I'm looking primarily to use it at the range rather than hunting. I've rad that I should get a spring-loaded rifle, and I 'm not sure if all A2's are spring loaded. Any info you could provide would be helpful. At the pawn shop, I saw one for around $700.

What do you mean by 'SPRING LOADED'? Stick with the name brands like Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River and you'll be fine.

If you buying used check the wear on the bolt and carrier and make sure the barrel is bright and shiny.

$770 for which brand and in what condition? There are so many excellent AR-15 manufacturer's these days with Colt, RRA and Bushmaster to name just a few of the better ones. Which is best opens up a big can of worms so let each shooter choose and enjoy the one they prefer. You lost me on the "spring loaded" question, they all have springs in the buffer tube for handling recoil. Do you mean adjustable stocks? or the recoil spring?

Spring loaded? You sure this advice wasn't given about airsoft guns?
Or are you refering to a "Spring Loaded Ejector" ... every AR15 has a spring loaded ejector (its one of the things that AR-15 haters complain about too).

At any rate, A2 configured AR-15s are going to be among the best priced ones (most people these days want flat tops).

Cheapest way to go about it is to buy your upper and lower separate (just make sure when buying an upper that it includes the bolt and carrier).

Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, DPMS, Stag, Colt ... any of those should be fine from a quality standpoint (and there are several other good brands, I'm sure someone will list them). A side note on Colts, all the other brands parts are pretty much interchangeable, but some Colts are not ... they have different sized pins or something, so IIRC its not a good idea to mix Colt lowers with other brands uppers and vise versa unless you're absolutely certain they'll fit each other.

Olympic Arms aren't bad (and are generally lower priced) but not considered quite as nice as the others ($10 says this $700 pawn shop AR was an Oly).

Avoid Hesse Arms AR15s.

The folks at J&T are first class. They are based in KY and I've met one of the owners on a few occasions. I purchased a 24" fluted upper and a buddy bought a stripped lower from him.

I'm on my fifth AR and my buddy has built several. I am 100% satisfied with my upper and my buddy told me "the fit and finish of the Doublestar lowers are the best I've ever dealt with". Coming from him I wouldn't doubt their products one bit.

J&T and Doublestar are owned by the same folks if you guys didn't know. There are many brands to choose from and I personally own upper and lower combos with DSA, RRA, CMMG, and Stag parts on them and I've never been let down by one of them.

With all of these quality brands to choose from I'd try to find the best price/warranty that fits your budget and shoot the heck out of it.
