I was never anti-gun, but I never got any exposure to them as a kid.
I remember, back when I first heard about Florida debating, and eventually passing, their right-to-carry law (I'd never heard of the idea before; I didn't know then that Washington state had a similar law from 1961), thinking that this was a brave experiment, and that there would probably be a significant number of innocent people shot as burglars; but that it might even then be worth it. Boy have I been pleased, it's worked far better than I expected it to; in particular less *cost* as measured in questionable dead bodies.
I think the SF authors Edward E. Smith and Robert A. Heinlein got to me early and taught me that guns were tools, and sometimes supremely useful tools in emergencies.
Fairly shortly after I graduated from college (1977), I got myself a Ruger Mk I .22 and a Security Six .357, and got some friends to show me what to do with them.
