Anyone can quote a statistic that is either true or false.

The fact that a person (organization, etc) twists a statistic around to prove their own point does not necessarily make the statistic false.

Looking at any specific statistic, you have to analyze it within the context of a lot of other facts, including other statistics.

I learned in a college statistics class that tornados in Kansas and the barracuda catch off of Florida are statistically correlated. ;)

Does anyone else find it surprising that in 15-24 year olds heart disease is the number 4-5 killer?

That figure is the one in the criminological and psychological research. It really isn't an RKBA issue or one to go nuts about. It's probably true.

In fact, the argument is fairly convincing as it reduces the actually evil gun use death significantly by 50%. The evidence is convincing that even with a total gun ban the suicide rate would probably remain the same as other methods would be substituted.

So chill out. I know that facts sometimes intrude on ideology. This isn't the case here.

Having worked with suicidal clients, I can say that this is very true:

The evidence is convincing that even with a total gun ban the suicide rate would probably remain the same as other methods would be substituted.

If someone truly wants to die, they will find a way to do it. Guns are an effective means to end your life, but if suicidal people don't have access to a gun, they will find another plan.

It is an absolute, provable FACT, that 100%, that is right, 100%, of the people who die each year had been breathing.

It is apparent that the cause of death is breathing, and that practice must be banned immediately.

To summarize Harry Tuttle's data, in 2001:

59.1% of firearm deaths were suicides.
55% of suicides were committed with a gun.

50,930 violent deaths

20,308 homicides
11,348 killed with a gun
8,960 killed without a gun

30,622 suicides
16,869 suicide with a gun
13,753 suicide without a gun

Or maybe a pretty picture, specially prepared with High Road colors:

Let's see how we compare to the world:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/hea_sui_rat_mal

Selected gun-free utopias:
Japan - 25 per 100,000
Australia - 21.5 per 100,000
Canada - 21.5 per 100,000

United States - 19.8 per 100,000

On the other hand...

United Kingdom - 11 per 100,000

(that's just males; you can see females at http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/hea_sui_rat_fem )

What a great site!

By the way, did you know that more than 12% of Americans smoke pot?

Take a look at eight people at work tomorrow. One of `em is probably high! :D
