This was reported today in the NY Post.

    Your thoughts?

November 1, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - Osama bin Laden warned in his October Surprise video that he will be closely monitoring the state-by-state election returns in tomorrow's presidential race — and will spare any state that votes against President Bush from being attacked, according to a new analysis of his statement.
The respected Middle East Media Research Institute, which monitors and translates Arabic media and Internet sites, said initial translations of a key portion of bin Laden's video rant to the American people Friday night missed an ostentatious bid by the Saudi-born terror master to divide American voters and tilt the election towards Democratic challenger John Kerry.

MEMRI said radical Islamist commentators monitored over the Internet this past weekend also interpreted the key passage of bin Laden's diatribe to mean that any U.S. state that votes to elect Bush on Tuesday will be considered an "enemy" and any state that votes for Kerry has "chosen to make peace with us."

The statement in question is when bin Laden said on the tape: "Your security is up to you, and any state that does not toy with our security automatically guarantees its own security."

That sentence followed a lengthy passage in the video in which bin Laden launches personal attacks on the president.

Yigal Carmon, president of MEMRI, said bin Laden used the Arabic term "ay-wilaya" to refer to a "state" in that sentence.

That term "specifically refers to an American state, like Tennessee," Carmon said, adding that if bin Laden were referring to a "country" he would have used the Arabic word "dawla."

MEMRI also translated an analysis of bin Laden's statement from the Islamist Web site al-Qal'a, well known for posting al-Qaeda messages, which agreed that bin Laden's use of the word "ay-wilaya" was meant as a "warning to every U.S state separately."

"It means that any U.S. state that will choose to vote for the white thug Bush as president, it means that it chose to fight us and we will consider it an enemy to us, and any state that will vote against Bush, it means that it chose to make peace with us and we will not characterize it as an enemy," the Web site said, according to MEMRI's translation.

Wahooo I personally am apparently a threat to OBL. Nice to know little ole' me and my red state can get somebody's knickers in such a twist.

Heck one of the only reasons I see Bush as the clear choice is because he wakes up every morning and I truely believe his first thoughts are to find him some terrorists and kill em' dead. Warms my heart actually.

Geeez, why not come out and just beg for the bombs to stop dropping.

Would somebody please send this guy a telegram explaining that we are not Spain, We are Americans and it is American to pissed off and pissed off Americans are not to be trifled with. We are generally a good bunch of people who are more than willing to let you slide but we are only going to ouch quit it for so long.

Personally OBL can take his ultimatum and choke on that and all that he bit off that can't now chew.

I would think he means "state" by nation state.

Just another sign that OBL is healing someone breathing down his neck. Ain't too far from the day that he'll be slippin' down into the potter's ground.

So does this mean that we can consider those states that go for Kerry to have made a seperate alliance with OBL, and therefore in a state of rebellion and treason against the United States?

Osama, you are hereby invited to Texas. I venture to say that shortly after arriving, you'd find out if that 72 virgins she-it is true, or just a bunch of hooey - and when I say shortly, I mean on the order of seconds after you've been recognized.

Hey, don't forget to bring along your fellow goat-bangers - we have at least 30 million guns here, not to mention a couple of armored divisions at Ft. Hood, and we would give you a FINE Texas welcome.

There are also lots of hungry pigs here in Texas (I mean of the 4-legged, cloven-hooved variety), all of whom can't wait to see whether smelly terrorists taste good.

I think the word in Arabic is more specific than our English word "state," which as you state can have multiple meanings. The article stated,

Probably not a good idea for OBL and his goons to threaten the red states. We're the ones who have the most relaxed gun laws, the most CCWs and the most ammo stockpiled.

Al Jazeera released a transcript of the full thing, apparently it did not include the threat.

    I want the official poster:

Start with that old WWII propaganda poster with the image of Uncle Sam pointing his finger, saying "I YOU to buy war bonds/enlist/whatever"

Rework the Uncle Sam image into one of bin Laden. Change the quote to "Osama wants YOU to vote for Kerry"

I'd put one up in my living room.

Osama needs to stop beating around the Bush (no pun intended) and just clearly state he would prefer John Kerry to be President. I mean he has hinted at it, but I sure wish he would come out and say it. That would make this election so much not closer than it appears to be now.

    Here is the MEMRI link.

Looks legit to me, Lonnie. Which begs the question, did the media honestly 'misinterpret' the term, or did they obscure the meaning purposefully?

    3 guesses.

Not worried. If the The Base shows up here, they will just enroll at Purdue and become electrical or civil engineers.:D

To quote my favorite demon-fighter, Ash, my message to Osama:

    "Come get some!"
