Welp, after taking my newest purchase to the range and dumping the 200 rounds (230gr FMJ) for the initial test, the changes have begun. Not one FTF, FTE, Stovepipes, failed primer strikes, nothing. Not one function error.

But the damn thing bit me! :D I expected as much, big hands and a colt widespur factory hammer tend to cause a few scrapes. So that was one issue. GI trigger is to short! I noticed without mentally checking my finger placement that I was ending up with my middle phalanx over the trigger! So that's another issue. Sheesh.

So after thinking long and hard about it, this ol' girl is going to become a shooter. Factory parts are set aside, and new parts are added. Only major change has been fitting the GI frame to a .250 grip radius safety. Ah well, at least with the jig from brownell's it was easier than doing it by hand :D

So let's see here, got a Commander hammer, grip safety, and long trigger (trigger pull currently at 5-5.15 lbs). Time to go put another 200 rounds in and see how well this works.

Great, a Sistema is a great platform, I have one and it is great. If you are selling the hammer and trigger let me know, I would like another one for a build I have planned.

After looking at the pictures, I think you may have chopped up one of the original Colt built Sistemas. what was the first few digits of the SN and how many digits were there total.
Use this format 12XXX to cover the last few.
 
No no, no worries about it being an original Colt, this one was made in 1960-61 and has a six digit serial 108XXX

...and if I end up selling out the original parts i'll drop a PM
 
My Sistema came with a lousy finish, and finicky about JHP's....The finish, throating, springs, etc by Tripp & a few other Wilson internals and it is a sweet looker & shooter.
The "pimpish" sterling & gold overlay grips are strictly for show, too hard on the hands. I have three or four pair of Ostrich & Dble Diamond panels.
BTW, I liked the trigger on mine....

Sistema Clunker

Here's a pic of mine. This one has been refinished (parkerized) at some point in time. I ended up with it in a trade. It would not chamber a loaded cartridge and needed lots of attention internally.

"Someone" attempted to solve the non-feeding issue by throating the barrel and wasted it.

1911tuner lives a couple of miles from me, so he gave it his Magic Touch. He fitted a Springfield Armory barrel, new extractor, ejector, new springs, cut a feed ramp, etc., etc.

Now it works very nicely. It reliably feeds 230 ball, 230 JHP's, and 225 truncated cone cast lead flat point handloads...all with perfection.

But, that hammer likes to take big bites! :eek:

I gave mine a make-over at King's Gunworks (near me, in Glendale, CA). Besides the usual basics I added a CTC laser sight. Excellent handgun and the price, back in September of '01 ($299), was right.

Yeah, it's a collector piece for sure. Not many know the originals had 3 matched mags, not 2. A now deceased, but much loved friend of mine, was so happy to find a great looking Sistema a few decades ago, he left without the 3 matched mags!:eek: He said any US .45 will do! Rich was a gentleman and a shooter, NOT a collector!;) The original pistol above would be mint if it was not for someone squeezing a lemon or something near it......but it is still a charmer!:cool: Thanks! I've had one for many years. When I got mine, it had worn bluing, deep scratches, cracked grips and badly battered sights. I replaced grips and sights, and after shooting it, I noticed shiny spots inside. Another shooting session and the spots were larger -- the gun, although showing a lot of holster wear, was virtually unfired.

It does bite, though. I got a bevertail safety with a bump for two-handed shooting and clearanced it for the issue spur hammer and cured that problem. I kept the old safety in case, for some reason I want to return the gun to original condition.

I've fired this gun with everything you can imagine -- from military ball to light semi-wadcutters -- and it eats everything I feed it.

After several years, I got a Kimber Classic and retired it as a carry gun. It's currently wearing a Colt Service Ace conversion kit.
