I would simply start with 257roberts data for the same bullet weights. The case is the same and bore dia is only SLIGHTLY different, pressure will be slightly less due to the higher expansion ratio afforded by the larger bore.

Another thought here is the need to slug the barrel if it is a type 38 6.5 Arisaka. Some of these barrels have been found to be a bit larger than .264".

Yep NCsmitty,it's a old ariska 38,has lotta marking's on it even got the ole crown.Pretty neat. The brl. look's good deep and wide rifling's but not marking's and real clean. My smith here told me he thought it had a old style hart brl..It definatly is a after market not a militarty brl.I've tried all kind's of ld's.And by that I mean H4831,H414,aa3100,H4895I think even some H1000and some Imr7828,And I tried some hor imr 4350 to,It has a 1-8 1/2 or 1-9 So been sticken to 129 grn and 140 grn.Horn.bullet'sI'am gonna dropo the 129 I think and just work a few more ld's with 140.Especially with a 1-8 1/2or 9 twist. The after market stock was hitting on the action and lotta different place on the brl.channel so took lotta wood out enough to get a piece of paper to slide under.I didn't think i was ever gonna get enough wood removed to slide piece of paper under.I tried a one shot test last night 47 grn's of H4831 Mag primer (win.)Set the bullet's 20 th.'s off land's.Didn't get a dish on the pri.but sure flattened it. so come back to 44.5and 45.0.That should clear that up I'd think.GOOD HUNTIN and Good Shooting

NCsmith I presume your a North Carolina Smith. And I'am gonna go the 5 blk.'s to my smith's house and see about sluggin this brl. It may of been miss mark'd.And I never slugged it cause the gun store I bought it in 1200 miles from here.Cause at the time I was living in Ore. Knew what he was talking about when he said it was a 6.5x257.Maybe it's just a straight .257 robert's.Wow what a dummy if that's so.But I never slug a gun I alway's take the store saleman's word. And so does 99.9999999% of the rest of the world. But it sure would explain the hi pres. with what should be low pres. ld's.My old Hodgdon book list's 50 grn.'s for a ld of H4831.so I sure was surprised when 47 grn's had a extremly flat primer.Anyway Later could explain 3.5and 4 inch group's at a 100yd's to.Well thanx and good hunting.Jeez some people's kid's.:)

mregunz, I suggested slugging the barrel if it was an original military, not an aftermarket.
Chances are it's a 6.5 and you seem to have a good supply of proper powders.
I would try the 140gr with a start load of H4831 around 45gr, and I'm sure something will work for you.
Keep us posted how it shoots.

IRCC the 6.5x257 was a common rechambering on the old Arisikas brought back from the 2nd WW. The proper ammo was hard to come by and the 6.5x257 cleaned up the old chamber just fine.
Hodgdons #26 manual has data for the cartridge and a call to them should get you a few starting loads anyway. Performance is very similar to the 6.5x57 or Swede.

Thanx again everyone,I just got back from a test fire for pres. And still need to come outta it some.I'am clear down to,43.0and 43.5 grn's of H4831 with still a little pres.sign's pri.'s are still a little flat edges are a little rnd noe ,no dishing(or cratering) whichever you prefer to call it.I like dishing. So what I'am gonna ld up is 2 at 42.0 and 2 at 42.5.Then see if I can hit any paper eventually. It's been such a wet spring so far it's hard to go to the range. As I don't like walloring in the mud.And I belive 50,52,54,000 saami is the same if it's with 48 grn.'s of powder or 40 grn's,So when I have nice rnd. pri.'s no flatening I should be at about 50,000 I'am sure. And these old Arisikas will take that easy and way more According to ole P.O.Ackley when he done test's with.Said he could seperate every action except the Arisika mod.38's.So as long as I'am at 50,000 with a 140 grn. I should be getting about 2700 or there about's with it it only has a 22" wish it had a 26" or 28".And As OL'JOE.Said about them rechambering the old orig. 6.5X50 to 6.5X257 is for sure according to what I've been told and were billed as a very accurate target rnd. for it's day.So should be able to get 3/4" or 1" anyway. It's very nice looking ole gun someone reblu'd it in the 50's I'd say old style bluing,Some one work'd the military trig.and is not bad for old military, and someone work'd the claw so you can put a shell in the chamber and the claw will pop over just like a great ole ruger 77.Well this is plenty long enough post ....GOOD SHOOTING and HUNTING

:( well rat's 42.5and 42.0 still had flat primer's so,going all the way to40.0 and 40.5 grn.'s of H4831.The 42.0and 42.5 were little better but not to much.Have a good day tomorrow and good hunting and shooting
