Old Wingmaster

I found a Wingmaster in a pawn shop today for $169. It is pretty old looking it has a nice wooden stock set with the corn cob forend. The bluing is very nice and the bolt was nicly polished. The action was very smooth but not loose feeling like some old shotguns can get. I put it on lay-a-way and she should be home within the week. Inside the reciever was clean to the touch so it seems like it had been taken good care of. I am pretty sure it has a 20" barrel on it.

Is there anyway to get a rough guesstimation on the year of production with out the SN handy?

Edit: The SN is on the receipt so does Remington have a place to date.

They also had a nice stainless Beretta 92 for $399 and a Star Firestar for $200.

I think Remington website has a serial number database, check it out. Also consider the Firestar for $200. If in decent shape in any of the calibers it comes in that seems like a decent price. A Remington 870 Wingmaster in the condition and price you mention seems like an decent deal also.

Old WMs are special. They also last longer than we. I've two here from the 50s. Neither has ever glitched, one is part of my homeowner's insurance plan.

Now, go shoot it.

Remington's service number is 800-243-9700. Call them with the serial number and they'll tell you how old it is.

Both my 870's are older used Wingmasters and I couldn't be happier.

Slick, smooth, and reliable.

You'll have to call Remington with the # to get an age. If you can get the date codes off the barrel, you can date it that way as well, but if you don't think the barrel is original to the gun it's a moot point.

I have an 870 express model, I bought it new when I was 18. I wish I knew better then, I could of gotten two of the classiest pump shotguns ever made. There is somthing about the way that Wingmaster is scrolled at an angle on the reciever. The second I touched it I knew it had to be mine.

I got the shotgun home and broke her down, she is much smoother and better fit than my Express. The internals look brand new, and besides finish wear on the stock the gun looks unused. My 5 year old Express shows more age than this one and the barrel codes date it to 1975.

I was thinking it was a police gun at one time as well. I am gonna call Remington and see if they can tell me anything about it.
