I’m shopping for a new scope for my Rem 700 in 30/06. It’s my deer hunting rifle. I’m looking at a used Leupold Vari-X 3-9 X 40. The scope is cosmetically in rough shape but is bright and clear. They are asking $200 but would probably come down a little. My main questions are 1) Will I have problems with any potential warranty work because the scope is scratched up (abuse). 2) Have there been any significant changes (good or bad) that I should know about when buying an older used scope.

The other option Im thinking about is just buying one of the new Redfield for 150-170 and being done with it. Thanks for your thoughts.

vari-X what? 1? 2? 3? a few years ago leupy moved from the vari X designation to the Vx designation. when they did vari x 2 became vx1 and vari x 3 became vx2, etc.

you shouldn't have a problem with leupolds warranty. if you're in vx1 territory there are many other scopes you could try. sightron, burris, vortex, nikon, redfield like you mentioned. Everybody has favorites, most will agree on top makers in a price range, but there is no consensus on a "best" one.

if you want a used leupy, like new varix2 or vx1's ones sell for 150-200 +shipping all the time. if you want gloss, that's the way I would go. if you want matte, I'm leaning toward a vortex diamondback or used sightron s2 myself. but I am not a scope guru. I would not pay $200 for a used vxi/vari-xii.

    Thanks Greyling,

That is just what I was looking for. Its a Vari-x2 so I was compairing it with vx2 and it seamed like a good deal, but compairing it with vxI its not that great after all. I would like to buy a USA built scope...that just how I am...so I will keep shoping. Thanks for the links aswell.
