DAYTON | The man pounded on the front door of the home on Kimberly Circle, terrifying the couple inside.
Then he smashed the front window, climbed inside and went to the living room where he met the male homeowner, who was holding a gun.
"(The homeowner) told him to stay back, but he didn't listen," Lt. John Huber said.
The 62-year-old man then shot the intruder several times.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Dayton police said.
The man, Emanuel C. Cain, 45, of Dayton, was arrested and has been charged with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, according to Dayton Municipal Court documents.
"The elderly occupants did not know this subject and refused to open the door," Lt. David Sherrer said.
When police arrived they found Cain on the living room floor, bleeding from injuries to his right arm, legs and head, according to a police report.
When questioned by police, Cain said, "Some dudes took my car. It's a white 2003 Chevy. They are riding around in the car chasing me. They're trying to kill me," the report said.
Police found the Cain's wife's car on Bowie Drive, with the engine and lights on and a flat tire, Lt. John Huber said.
Cain was taken to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for wounds to his upper leg, Sherrer said.
