OMG!!!! I did the worst thing I've ever done to a gun today!

Sorry it took me so long to get back fellas. Work gets in the way sometimes. I called ATI again but to no avail. I told them that maybe they just didn't get the finish right but of course the customer is always wrong! They said I voided the warranty so whatever. The good thing is I did order a duracoat scheme but ya'll are gonna have to wait till I finish it. I will take pics along the way to share the process for anyone else who might be interested in it, it'll probably be next week sometime, but thanks for all the advice guys. I was totally distraught! But now I def think it's a positive in disguise!

So using Breakfree CLP voids their warranty? This is a company I never want to deal with.

I lube most of my guns with Breakfree CLP and use it as oil and I've never had any issues with any of them.

I would at least try to get to a second tier of customer service before closing the door completely.

IF tier two is just as...nice as the first one then I would light 'em up.

I just feel in a mood today. I sent ATI's customer service an email. I am curious to see the result.

I am to understand that BreakFree CLP voids your warranty. Please tell me that I am wrong on this information.

Thanks,

Yeah that. AFAIK, Breakfree CLP is one of the mildest cleaners out there. I had an incident once where CLP took the finish off an aftermarket sight-mounting adapter on a rifle. I contacted the maker, and he was very apologetic about an "insufficiently cured finish" and replaced the part at no cost to me. That's the way it "s'posed to be."

Here's what to do..

Well, with any luck, you paid with your Visa card.
Take it back to the gun shop. Demand a refund. If they tell you no, tell them you are going to dispute the charges because the product is obviously defective.

If they refuse to refund your money, call Visa, and dispute the charges; you'll get your money back. It's blatantly unacceptable for a firearm to have a finish get stripped off by basic cleaner.

I think the gun shop is equally responsible. If the guy behind the counter is selling this junk, and doesn't let his customers know, he deserves to eat the loss as well. Let him sort it out with the manufacturer.

If you didn't pay with Visa, I'd still demand the refund from the shop anyway.

I'm with mizzlep on the gun shop part. Anyone who operates a gun store should know that breakfree shouldn't hurt a gun like that.

I got this reply back from ATI today. I would suggest calling this gentleman and figuring out what is going on.

Hi Jeff,

No Sir CLP does not void the warranty of the firearm.

I have used CLP on every firearm I own, I've never experienced anything like that. I assume any cleaner would produce the same results on you rifle.

That is strange. I have a couple of "pawn shop orphan" guns that I stripped and refinished with spray paint and have cleaned and lubed with CLP (but not the spray can variety, the bottled liquid CLP Break Free).

I just tried to strip a rattle can finish on an gun. Hoppes took it off after I soaked it. Also sprayed the whole barrel assembly with goof off and B-12 and wrapped in a rag. NO damage to the factory finish. Your finish is DEFEctive!

Did the same thing, just powder coat it and be done. For all you duracoat fans, Gunscrubber will eat your finish as well. Learned that the hard way also. Can't find anything that will mess with powder coating yet.

I use gunscrubber on duracoated firearms all the time. Never had it do anything to the finish. Duracoat and Ceracoat are pretty much untouchable.

I had my STG556 duracoated and gunscrubber messed it all up. Maybe I just used it to soon. The finish was only on about two weeks.

So dont use gunscrubber? I've always used Hoppes #9 and I dont soak the gun parts in it so I dont think that should cause a problem. I could see copper remover or heavy duty gun cleaner doing something to a Duracoat finish though. Don't think I'll try it. I am planning on Duracoating a gun once I get my next one so I'll keep a look out just in case.

@ Mikenmel08: I think 2 weeks is probably too soon. Duracoat cures over a period of several weeks. It should be solid enough to start handling the gun normally after a couple weeks, but I'd be pretty careful with solvents on that finish during that time.

Anyway, I put a lot of insect repellent on myself and went back to shooting. Next thing I knew, my hands, wet with repellent, were getting all sticky, I looked down and here, the wood finish was all coming off the BRAND-NEW 700 and onto my hands!

Some insect repellant can double as paint stripper. I've seen where cans of it have leaked on store shelves and the paint on theshelves comes right off. Nasty stuff.
