32 mag are you out there ? qeustion for you about my h&r american/ 32 sw long, .so i know it didnt have a loading gate ,so as to keep the shells from falling out but was told that the cylinder rotated to and locked in place to keep shells in,but my cylinder just free spins .Do i have something broke? thanks in advance for any info. Can you let the hammer rest in between two rounds, right on the cylinder? If so, it'll keep the cylinder in place and the gun will be drop-safe.

The AMERICAN DOUBLE ACTION was made with a "free wheeling" cylinder through out it's production span. The cylinder only locked up tight when the hammer was a full cock, either SA or DA, the rest of the time it can be "spun". The "cut out" in the right side loading gate was intended, primarily, as a "view port" although it could be used to load and unload, slightly awkwardly even with the loading groove cut into the frame. The instructions for this model stated (as Woad Yurt posted) that the gun could be carried with the firing pin resting on the cylinder face between cartridge rims or rested on a "spent" casing - either way the cylinder would be locked in place. The other thing to consider is that this item was intended to be used as a pocket gun with the short barrels, or a belt/holster gun with the longer barrels and the chances of it being carried upside down were/are very slim.
