My interest in the CZ52 was piqued when I was at my friendly (yes, that's right friendly) local pawn shop the other day looking for a Ruger Mark II. As we were browsing the cases I saw the CZ52 and remarked to the owner that I'd never seen such a gun.

After a brief discussion of the gun I went on my merry way and didn't give it much thought until I saw another thread here on the Maks and CZ52's.

Now I'm thinking that this might be a fun thing to add to the stable.

So, here's the true heart of the question: The CZ52 does not appear on the Maryland roster of approved handguns. It does however list the CZ50. Are these the same things? If not, is it legal to even possess this weapon in our fair state?

By extension, many of the old East European guns do not appear on "the list". Is there exemption for guns no longer in production?

cz-50 and cz-52 are 2 different animals.

The 50 is a ppk look alike and in caliber .32 acp

The 52 is the bigger brother of 50 and it is in caliber 7.62 x 25mm. It is a hot round and ejects shell 35 feet away. I'll post picture of the 2 so you can tell the difference.

Here's the pics:

The Maryland handgun roster applies only to guns made in or after 1985. The VZ-52 was long out of production by that time and can be sold in Maryland. The dealer should know that.

Note that that law also applies only to transfers, not possession. If you have a post-86 gun that is not on the roster (say you owned it in another state and moved to MD), you can legally keep it, you just can't sell it in the state.

BMW,

I suspected that they were indeed two different guns but thought that there might be the chance that they were the same frame but in different calibers. By looking at your pictures, I see that they are two very different firearms.

I might add that those are two pretty good examples!

Would you figure $165.00 out the door would be a good price for a 52....the one at the shop appeared to be in pretty good shape.

Jim,

That helps a lot to know that 1985 is the "magic" year for the handgun roster. The dealer, I'm sure, knows this....I didn't ask him because at the time I was only eyeing it as a curiosity. I wanted to check with an independent authority just to make sure the shop was on the up and up. You hear stories sometimes about less than honest pawn shop owners (of which I'm convinced that this guy is NOT.....was very straightforward on the other guns I expressed interest in).

So if a gun was made pre-1985 and is out of state, can I bring it into the state? My father in law has quite a collection that I'm sure will be parcelled out in the future.....

$165 is not too bad for a gun shop price on a CZ52. Of course then you are going to have to add MD's 5% sales tax on top of that plus the $10 NICs fee. Also if you haven't done so you will have to watch the gun safety video. The CZ50 & CZ52 are both C&R pieces. There aren't too many CZ50s around commercially lately but you can pick up a CZ52 from SOG for $119.95 plus shipping with a C&R license which will run you $30 for three years.

JBP,

Already done the time on that oh so helpful video :)

Help me out there with the abbreviations.....SOG? C and R?

Still trying to learn all of the short hand. :)

C&R-a Curio and Relics (collectors) form of Federal Firearms License. Allows you to buy selected firearms (mostly older and surplus weapons) directly for your PERSONAL collection, not for selling.

SOG-Southern Ohio Gun, a big gun and C&R dealer.

BTW, BMWGUY-how's that CZ50? I keep toying with the idea of picking one of those up.

DT-
My cz-50 is a keeper.

It groups fairly decent for its size. I can group up to 15 feet, I'm having a harder time keeping the group together 20+ feet, Maybe its the sight(ain't the greatest).

My 50 has been 100% reliable. I've read some instances that some of the cz-50 have problem when you load the full 7/8 rounds, but my has been great.

I was even considering using this cz-50 as my CCW, but the lack of potent 32 ACP is preventing me. I think the best out there is the Win Silvertip.

My advise is to get one if you can find them. I believe the only company that carries them right now is Century in good condition. Price isn't bad either, I believe 109 or something like it.
