First off, if this thread is counter to the rules, I apolgize and understand if it gets whacked. It is however directly related to gun and civil liberties.
In a previous thread I suggested that folks write to the chief of police in missouri concerning a statemant about a "semi auto machine pistol". In the name of fairness I feel obligated to tell you that the Chief responded to my email imediately. His response was this...


Yes - I have corrected this today. I miss spoke and they ran with it. I find anytime they can discredit gun ownership they will. I appreciate your concern for guns rights which I fully support.

Its a GREAT thing when we see LEO openly support our rights! It often puts their position at peril.The chief sounds like a great guy!

I'm not saying this is bull...but I'd like to see the actual email reply if possible. I agree that it's a fantastic response to the misstatement, but I find it hard to believe that the Chief has the time to answer emails at all at this particular point in time, especially from non-newsmedia.

I don't mean to come off as a naysayer, I just would like to see actual verifiable email proof that he said as such.
 
Well.. I dont know what you would like to see so that you dont feel the need to call me a liar (I copy and pasted the email into the thread) . Which is what you are in no uncertain terms doing. Why dont you pm me your email address and I will forward the entire exchange to you. OR you could email him yourself and find out instead of whining about the state of affairs but not doing anything about it. His email addy is posted in the thread that was locked. I promise I wont share your email addy with anyone else... But you know how much you trust my word.
 
Thanks for jumping down my throat. FWIW, I'm NOT intending to call you a liar, I just wanted to see the actual email it came from, because I'm suprised that a Chief of Police who's dealing with a pretty serious shooting had time to write back to you on the matter.

"Whining about the state of affairs, but not doing anything about it"? What are you talking about? I'm not whining, I have a legitimate question as to the reality of the quote you attribute to the Chief. If an anti posted the following on a messageboard:

The Chief of Polie of Neosho explained to me in an email today "All gun owners are out of their minds. They're completely loony, and they all smell like doo-doo."

You'd want a source to prove that, because otherwise, the person has just typed something and attributed it to the Chief. If it's true, they should be able to show that it's true.

I said in my earlier post that it's fantastic if that's actually what he said, and I mean that. How is asking for a screenshot of the email, or even a screenshot of the headers of the email "whining"? I'm sorry if I've upset you, but that's not my problem. I'm asking a legitimate question. If you'd like to answer it, that's cool. If not, that's your perogative as well. But don't try to make me sound like I'm raking you over the coals just because I'm asking you to backup your statements with fact.

And if you'd like my email, I can give it to you right here. No need to PM.

That has nothing to do with it. My point, is that Notch made a post with a statement supposedly emailed to him from the Chief of Police of Neosho. That statement was typed in, with no other source of verification other than Notch's say so. I'm simply asking for a source to back up that it is actually from the Chief of Police of Neosho, and not something that's been fudged. Now, when I say "fudged", I don't mean that it's been maliciously written here to mislead us - rather that it could have come from ANYWHERE and copy/pasted here. What's so hard about taking a quick screen shot and showing us the headers of the email to prove where it came from? There's no risk to Notch, he doesn't have to show his details if he doesn't want to.

Bottom line, is that as gun owners we experience misinformation ALL THE TIME about one of our biggest interests - guns. It is our job to seek the source of this information, so that we can know whether or not it's the truth. Trust, but verify, right? If I say "you know, doctors actually advise AGAINST drinking milk because it makes you sterile." you'd want proof, right? Same here. I believe Notch, and I'm glad the Chief said what he said, but what is it without proof? What if I were to tell my friends about what the chief said? Could I prove it? I could say "this dude online said he said it", but that's pretty shaky. If I say "this dude online said he said it, and here's a screenshot of the actual email", then that's something tangible, something much harder to call "BS" on.

Not trying to start a fight. Just looking for a verifiable source to back it up. Sorry if that's too much to bother with.
 
Kingpin - while I can't speak on behalf of Notch, but I do know that I live about an hour away from Neosho. I find it fully fully fully believable that the chief of police did in fact reply to his e-mail. Neosho is a small town with about 10,000 people total living there. A chief in a town that size has nothing better yo do than e-mail citizens back. I understand your skepticism, but for once just be happy that there is a police chief on our side. (In the LARGE department I worked for, Springfield, MO, the Police Chief is very anti-gun, including changing out the issue gun caliber from 40 to 9mm cause 40 is too intimidating).
 
What benefit would he have to lie about it? I see no way it would help our cause by lieing about the Chief's response, in fact it could do us even more harm by falsely turning a blind eye to this cheif's comments and views.

If you really doubt it just email the Chief and see if he gives you a similar response.
 
Commander - I can appreciate that you think so, and once more for the record, I'm not saying it's impossible - I just would like some verification. I can appreciate a small-town police officer having a lot of free time, but to be fair, he's got a hell of a lot to deal with at the moment, so the usual schedule doesn't really apply, ya know?

And once more, for the record - I am THRILLED that the Chief would take the time to retract his statement, but that's not the point. I simply want a source to prove that! That's ALL I'm trying to say! I don't understand how my comments asking for a source to back it up equates to my not liking the statement! That doesn't make any sense. I want to be able to prove ANY statement I hear, whether it's someone telling me I've won 2 million dollars, or whether it's someone telling me my car just got stolen by rabid weasels. Ya know?

What does benefit have to do with it? Sometimes people say things, and someone else wants them to prove it. I'm simply asking for a verifiable source corroborating the statement. You've brought up an interesting point - "how could this hurt our cause?"

While that's not why I'm asking for proof, I'll tell you how. Because one of the things that the anti-gun lobby LOVE to do is throw out random, unverifiable statements with no basis whatsoever in fact. One of the biggest reasons that they're failing in this country is because they consistently fail to cite sources for their statements, even in the face of those who do. By not citing his source, Notch mimics these tactics, throwing insults back at the questioner because it seems easier than just showing where the statement comes from.

So there you go, a perfect reason why this sort of thing WOULD hurt us. If people look at this thread, and see that I'm basically being jumped on for asking the OP to cite a source, they'll sit back and say "well wait a minute - isn't that the EXACT thing these pro-gunners get on the Brady Campaign for? They holler for the anti's to cite their sources, but they can't be bothered? What hypocrites!"

That's why it's a good reason to show proof of where things come from.

Thanks for his address. I don't need it though. I'm more interested in a screenshot of the email or the email's headers that Notch says contains this statement. Whether or not I could write the Chief and get the same response means nothing. He didn't claim that I could, and I never said that I couldn't. He claimed that this statement

came to his email. My writing to the Chief has no bearing in that, regardless of what I recieve back.

That is ALL I'm saying. I'm beside myself that the Chief took the time to correct himself and support us, but I'd be much happier if there was some HARD PROOF besides words on a screen! Seriously, is it really that hard to understand?

If you were discussing this issue with a friend, and you brought up the Chief's statement posted here by Notch, what would you want to be able to say if your friend didn't believe it? Would you rather say "Well, some guy on the internet said it was true and I believe him!" or "Well, some guy on the internet said it was true and I believe him, because here's PROOF!"

See what I mean?

So once again, pm me your email addy and I will forward the exchange, if that is not gfood enough for ya then stop asking for something that is impossible to give. I am after all so far the only one that has actualy posted a REAL NAME concerning this affair, and that is because I have nothing to hide. So if a cut and paste of an email is not good enough brainscan, tell me what is? Maybe a cut and paste? Or how about a cut and paste? Not ALL cops are bad just cus most are. Just like not all smokers are idiots and not all kids in their 20s are wet pups. So come on my frisky little friends... Send me your email addys or get off the toilet.

BTW, in my view it was you who first jumped down my throat with your claim that I was fabricating (LYING) the post.
 
BTW... The email was a return from HIS EMAIL ADDY with his county emblem... So maybe it is some left wing hackers..... they got to my email first and have started a conspiracy... Same folks who did the moon landing thing and got us to believe that Bush didnt have something to do with 9/11.... Why didnt I see it before... you boys are hella funny...

This would ruffle my feathers too. It does appear to say that you think he is making this up. That may not have been your intentions, but that is how you post came across to many. Just keep it simple.

keep in mind,the first thing kingpin said was " i'm not saying this is bull..." and no one EVER called you " a liar " (your words).
another point.....this police chief supposedly said " i MISS-spoke.." (emphasis mine). a very unusual spelling mistake from an elected official,these days, yet your posts seem to have plenty.
