Yesterday, I was traveling back home to the DFW area, and detoured from I-45 by heading west to I-35 (from Groesbeck to Waco, in case you're interested). Most of the drive is 70 mph, but there are a few small towns that appear that will slow you down from 70 to 55, then down to 40 and 30, as you approach town.

I had stopped at a red light in one of these towns, then accelerated up to the 40 mph speed limit. Up ahead was the 50 mph sign, so I accelerated again (before I reached the sign). Almost at the same time, a local police car appeared, going the other way. By now I'm at the 50 mph sign, but I saw him swing around and put his lights on. Since we were the only two cars on the highway, it was pretty obvious who he wanted to speak to.

I pulled over, took out my DL and CHL, and sat there with the window open, and my hands on the steering wheel as the officer approached.

He said "Sir, I'm pulling you over for driving 50 in a 40 mph area. Do you have your driver's license with you?" I responded by saying "I do officer, and I also have my CHL. Just so you're aware of it, I'd also like you to know I'm carrying today."

He took a look at my license and CHL, and said "Trophy Club, Texas, huh? (naming my town)" I said "Yes, sir."

He then said "Well, do you think you can slow it down a little until you get out of town?" I said "I'm quite sure I can, officer."

He said "Ok. By the way, what are you carrying?" I told him a 1911. With a smile, he handed me back my DL and CHL and said "Good man!" I thanked him for his courtesy and drove off.

For you Highroaders in Chicago, Massachusetts, New York, D.C., and other parts of America under the control of politicians that are of the opinion that it's citizens can't be trusted with the carrying of concealed weapons, I'm sorry. I hope this account hasn't ruined your day. OTOH, Texas has plenty of room and enormous opportunity for many of you. And boy, are the skies blue and the people friendly! :D geegee

sounds like everything went ok ;)

must you notify in texas?

Gotta love Texas. It may have been different if your vehicle had California plates, though. Last time I was in Texas was in the late '70's. I was driving a VW bug with California plates. I took the wrong road out of El Paso and wound up in Juarez. Turned around, tried to get back to the U.S and found myself detained for 5 hours while they tore my car apart looking for "contraband". They were polite, though, and returned my Ruger Security Six :)

Riley Mc, your story reminds me of the time my older brother got stopped by Oklahoma LE.

He was living in Texas, dropped across the border long enough to get a cheap haircut, then headed north toward Nebraska.

The word must have gone out about his short stop in Mexico. He wasn't very far into Oklahoma when the feds pulled him over and asked to search his pickup.

Brother had nothing to hide, and gave them the green light. Didn't take long to spot the .357 lying in plain sight on the passenger seat. "Is that thing loaded?" the fed asked.

"Hell yes it's loaded," my brother responded. "You can't shoot any one with an empty gun."

Long story short, they ransacked the pickup, threw all of his belongings on the side of the road, found nothing illegal and drove away without helping him to put the stuff back into the vehicle.

So much for feds.

As a native Texan I feel obligated to explain the actions taken against you by our finest:

We don't trust people from the land of fruits and nuts, and the VW, be it a bug or a mini-bus is notorious for transporting hippies and dope. :D

must you notify in texas?
Yes. And each time I've done so, the officer handling the stop said "Thanks...really appreciate that."

I was stopped about a year ago on I-20, headed to West Texas. The trooper who handled the stop said (after the whole process was completed) "Gee, this whole thing went just like we're told it should. This is my first time stopping someone with a CHL." I said "I probably shouldn't admit to this, but it's not my first."

info needed from texans ...

I have the opportunity to move to San Antonio for my career. What can you locals tell me about San Anton, its neighborhoods, crime if any, people and to keep this gun oriented .. shooting and bird hunting opportunities?

A lesson I learned while serving on the Grand Jury here in Multnomah county, (Portland, OR,).

Whenever an officer asks if they can search your vehicle, the only correct answer is "NO".

Once yopu have denied them the right to search they have to let you go or arrest you.

HAH! I KNEW IT!!

I knew I'd been "profiled".........:scrutiny:

heh

Funny, geegee. I got pulled over going south on I-45 last night coming fromDallas (license plate light was out).

Precisely the same story otherwise, including the 1911 part.

Do I understand you folks are going into MEXICO with firearms?

Either you have brass balls, don't know what WILL happen to you if caught, or Looking to be someones boy toy.
I have been South of border less then 6 times. Was always glad to be back but NEVER brought so much as one rd of ammo/gun/related stuff across. Heck I didn't even take my car across. Hired a cab from US side. IMO well worth it for 3hr trip.
I called around and set up when to go across, took me to two locations for @15min each then drop off at third. I called for return to USA. IIRC less then $35 and he knew exacty where to go.

I can not, under any circumstance, see the need to travel into Mexico. Nothing they have interests me, and it is not worth the risk to put your life in the hands of notoriously corrupt officials and police. I have been close by the border twice, and waited patiently while friends went across to save a few cents on vanilla extract. Whatever....

"it is not worth the risk to put your life in the hands of notoriously corrupt officials and police. "

Exactly how I feel about Massachusetts.

Logical argument #284:

a) No sane person would enter Mexico unarmed.
b) No law-abiding person would enter Mexico armed.

Therefore

c) No sane, law-abiding person would enter Mexico.

Same argument can be applied lots of palces inside the US as well....

:p

To keep this on topic, I was stopped in Arcola, TX recently. To keep a long story short, this was the first traffic stop with my CHL. As luck would have it I was returning from the range and had my CCW and 3 long-arms in the car with me.

Town officer was polite and didn't flinch when I informed him I had a CHL, but simply asked "where is your gun?" to which I answered "In a holster on my right hip." He said "Just make sure it stays there..." and proceeded to write me a ticket....

Wish I could say the CHL saved me a ticket, but in this case I don't think it made any difference at all....

RileyMc :
1969 went to Ca. in a 1967 VW (i was 9) dad gets into L.A. and stops for gas, after being passed by every one else on the road, asked the attendent "how do you people drive out here? attendent walks around to engine compartment, looks inside and says "pick a car infrount of you and try to hit him, don't worry you'll never catch'm.

san antoin is ok, about like most cities that size has good neighborhood and some bad, less liberal than austin, nice surrounding countryside.
most hunting is on private land so can be expensive compared to other states but the weather doesn't try to freeze you to often.

Larry_minn:

Shouldn't have made my long story so short, I guess. My brother did not take his firearm into Mexico. His mother didn't raise any dummies.

He stopped at his residence in Edinburg to shower off the loose hairs, change clothes and do a couple other chores before he headed north. Plenty of time for the INS and DEA folks to share information.

Bob's Smokehouse!

Great BBQ. Looks like a condemned shack, at least it did way back in 199<something>.

Technically I'm not a local, but I did take a business trip there a few times.

Since Texas got concealed carry I have been stopped 8 or 9 times, mostly for speeding.

I DO NOT try to speed but I traveled over 400 miles to work one day a week and got caught just not paying attention.

Over half the time I was stopped by locals in known speed traps.
In one well known speed trap I was stopped 4 times but only the first and fourth time for speeding.
The fourth time, like "geegee", speeding up before I got to the 65mph sign.

The fourth time I got out laughing and asked the Cop, who had stopped me 2 times before, What are you stopping me for this time.:D
He said, Oh, Hi how you doing?
It was cold and I kept him there BS'ing until he finally said, I don't care what you do but I'm going to go get warm.:D

Since I have had the carry license I NEVER got a ticket.

Many times I detected a noticeable change in attitude on the Officer's part when I gave him my license and announced I have a concealed handgun license.

Only once did an Officer ask me what gun I had and that, I think, was because he may have been a "gun person".

Speed traps are prohibited by law here in California. We're quite *progressive*, you know :neener: "Drive Friendly"

larry minn:

I did not purposely enter Mexico. I got on the wrong road in El Paso and turned around right away. I was in Mexico only about 5 minutes or so.

On other occasions, I have been jailed in both Tijuana and Ensenada during my mis-spent youth, "disrespect to a police officer" IIRC was the charge. A sober buddy of mine bailed me out both times.

Some of my youthful behavior makes me cringe today.:uhoh:

Sometimes things like that happen in Kentucky. A LEO once told me that when he stops someone and they flip out a CCW along with their drivers license, he knows that he's got a trustworthy person. Usually, he lets them off with a warning.
Personally, I haven't been stopped for speeding but I HAVE been stopped for going too slow.:scrutiny:

KR

Chance favors the prepared mind.

I don't believe I've ever observed you bragging that obnoxiously before, GeeGee. Must you rub their noses in it so?
You're right. I got light headed with the euphoria that will sometimes overwhelm a "transplanted Texan." Heady stuff, you know? :p

Since I have had the carry license I NEVER got a ticket.

That's the point I keep trying to make to people. Both here and in Georgia, it seems that a CHL/permit gives one immunity from tickets.

I'm glad you had a pleasant experience with your LEO , but I have to tell you that MA isn't necessarily as bad as many make it out to be . I'm pretty sure that I can carry in more places than you in TX , at least unlike many places , establishments serving alcohol aren't off limits and I have yet to see a business with a *no weapons* sign . I happen to have an outstanding town police department and had no issues obtaining my LTC . I understand that others do however , but the blame must be placed on their respective CoP or Officer assigned to approve permits , not on the State laws themselves .

I haven't been stopped for speeding but I HAVE been stopped for going too slow.

slow drivers are the worst IMO

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

At the same time, I don't drive like its the indy 500, but I try to keep my speed with the traffic, and when you run into that one person who decides that going 5 to 10 under when the conditions are peferect are a huge PITA, and a danger to everybody else who are trying to pass them.
