Remington 700 Varmint in .308, synthetic stock (preferably a McMillan) pillar bedded and free floated, Leupold 4.5-14 Vari-X III, 2.5-3 pound trigger, shooting handloads with 150 Nosler Accubonds at about 2900 fps (Easily doable with a 26 inch barrel and Varget or RL15).

Just my .02,

No Brainer

No Brainer,
Remington M700 ADL in .308 Win.

I DO really like the CZ in 6.5 swede idea though!

7mm MAG???? on those little pigmy whitetails in Arkansas? Too much gun in my opinion!
JM cents worth,

My choice is going to depend on terrain. If I'm hunting the thick mountains of the east then my choice is a Winchester 94 .30-30 with iron sights. If I'm hunting the open fields and orange groves of Florida I'd prefer something in .308 with a low power scope.

I like my lever action 30-30. It's my favorite rifle and almost always puts a smile on my face. It's more than accurate enough for the distances the vast majority of shots are taken. I am totally ok if others like a bolt action or a different caliber. For me, I picked it purely on the joy this rifle brings me.

I agree on all the 30-30 comments... hard to argue with the effectiveness and longevity of that one...

but, just to add something different to the conversation, M96 Swede. 6.5x55 is more than enough for TN whitetails...

I have a Pre-War Model 70 in .30-'06 that has been my "deer rifle" for over 50 years.
With this rifle I have taken 31 PA. whitetail bucks.
Gun safe is crammed with stuff but the Mod.70 is my favorite.

I would have said 30-30 a year ago, but after last years season. I have to say 25-06. I now have a Marlin XL7 in 25-06 with a Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite 4200. With Winchester 115 grain Ballistic Tips I can put 3 into one hole at 200 yards, and five into less than 1/2". I shot two deer standing next to each other at 300 yards this last year with that gun. Both feel like a domino. Just tipped right over.

My vote?
25-06
It doesn't matter what gun. The caliber is deadly. DEADLY I tell you.

30 06

30 06
bolt
any good one

30 cal has about the most component bullets available.
With proper hand loading the 30 06 can take whitetails in any situation.
It is also suited to just about any game animal in North America.

I'm just glad I don't have to choose just one.

Hand's down, a marlin 336 in .30-30. Great balance, great accuracy, easy to carry, low recoil and it get's the job done.

I'm bad this way and from what I see others are too.

I say 30 '06 because when you need to, you can do so many other things with it.

The 270, 308 and 25 '06 advocates are not wrong but 30 '06 keeps it simple as well as adding versatility.

I have "limited" mine to 30 '06 and also 30-30 when that suits the conditions.

Ultimately, one rifle application, I like bolt, 30 '06, M70.

Winchester model 70 sported in 270 with a Leo 3-9 on top. Its so perfect its boring. I actually use my 1187 in 12 GA more, as we are restricted to shotguns/pistols/bow/and muzzleloaders.

I am presently playing with a Mauser in 6.5x55. Nice caliber to play with.

hard to narrow down...here's my pick(s)

Weatherby Mark V synthetic in .300 Weatherby mag w/ Nikon Monarch 4 - 12 x 42 using Weatherby 180gr softpoint ammunition

Marin 1895G in .45-70 with Bushnell Trophy 3 - 9 x 40 using Hornady LeverEvolution 325gr ammunition

Mossberg 500 in 12 ga with Bushnell Banner 2 - 7 x 36 using Hornady SST 300gr sabot slug ammunition

The thing is the OP stated which for whitetails. Not best all around, and I will stick by the awe that a 25-06 brings to the table for whitetail deer. I have shot them with 30-30 my entire life. I have shot them with a .223, .32 H&R Magnum, 30-06, Shotgun. Nothing, and I mean nothing has inspired me to make such statements as a 25-06 on a deer. I know that it was my first two with the rifle, but to just boom boom and two down. Amazing. I am not trying to start a caliber war, but for me. I will pickup the 25-06 when it comes time to go to the woods. I feel sorry for my two 30-30s in the safe. Although I have a 5 year old daughter, and my son was born two weeks ago. The 30-30s will be theirs when time comes.

Now before anyone says .30s will boom boom as well. I know they will. I have no doubt that any rifle stated in this thread is KING of the woods with the owner holding the rifle. It is all about placement, but I had always heard stories of the 25-06 being a slayer, and dropping deer with any hit. Although my shots were very well placed. I have no doubt they the deer when hit were going down. Even if I had been off a little.

Let me tell you. Fist size holes going in. Total inhalation of organs. None. Notta. Zilch. Dead before their head hit the ground. No, blood shot meat. Bones were broken, tendons exploded. One bullet exited with a fifty cent piece hole. The other? I don't know. Who cares?

Reliable bolt action in caliber from 6.5 sumthinuranother up to whatever you like.

But if I had to have one gun for whitetail only hunting it would probably be a tack driver of some sort in either .270 WSM or .270 WBY. My second whitetail only choice would be a 6.5-06. Of course a guy can't go wrong with a .308 or a .30-06.

I prefer Model 70's and wouldn't use a M-700 for tomato stake there are simply to many good rifles out there to be stuck shooting a Remington.;)
