I am new to this forum and guns in general. Isn't there a website somewhere that is like a comprehensive encyclopedia, catalog or digest of every gun made along with a photograph of that gun? If there isn't, there ought to be. I have browsed around the internet but haven't really seen such an exhaustive and comprehensive website. Most sites it seems are just places that want to sell guns and supplies (big deal, there's a gun shop on every street corner just about). So I thought I would ask what some of your favorite websites like this might be that come close.

Also, there really ought to be an online version of the Blue Book of Gun values too (but no, they want you to buy a new book every year! I've often wondered where the Fjestad's get there values from to put in this book. Do they just dream them up themselves or do they perform thorough market research? Where do they get their research from?), but for now, I would just settle for a picture encyclopedia/catalog/digest type of a website.

I wouldn't say it's comprehensive, but I think this site is in the spirit of what you're looking for. I found it to be plenty of information for a relative novice (me).

http://world.guns.ru has good images and info. It's originally Russian, I can't vouch for its total accuracy, and the translation to English occasionally has some issues, but I like it.

Modern Firearms has a bunch of them, most with pictures, history, and specs.

    EDIT: Rumble beat me!

One more vote for our fellow THR member Max Popenker's www.world.guns.ru site. Incredibly comprehensive, fun to just browse and geek out on crazy Ukrainian submachineguns, French sniper rifles, and other stuff you've never heard of, and with tons of accurate and useful information on less exotic firearms. I've never spotted an error there, to the best of my recollection. Most entries have caliber, dimensions, variations, detailed information on the operating system and action, historical information, service history, pictures, and sometimes even field-stripping instructions.

Somehat more specialized in its focus, another THR member, Tony Williams, runs this great site: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/. Exhaustive detail and interesting, well-supported analysis on automatic cannons, machine guns, cartridges, and ballistics.

    Easy solution

Just go browse Gunbroker for a week or two. You'll see nearly everything go by.

It does take more than a week to get familiar with all firearms...in fact, it's a lifetime sport. But a couple weeks watching auctions will give you a heck of a survey.

world.runs.ru has some excellent information, but http://securityarms.com/all.html this website has a larger collection of photos of various types of guns. Some do not have any information other then the name of the gun, but its an alright guide to just see whats out there, then you can gather information on the firearm from other sources. Also, http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/index.html has some good stuff. That is all US Military Land Warfare systems.

He's a THR member. If you can't find the info you're looking for, send him a PM and maybe he can point you in the right direction.
