Just recently relocated to AZ, I know that this is an open carry state. How legal is it to open carry in Phoenix and its sorounding cities or are there different ordinance for every city? Should I even worry if I open carry? like getting a felony for possesion.

thanks

I open carry quite a bit, but live in a pretty rural part of the state. The law is that you can't carry at all in government buildings, schools, airports and places where liquor is served.

The law also requires those places to provide secure individual lock boxes to store firearms somewhere near the entrance. If such a lock box is not provided the individual may carry while on the premises.

I don't test that theory with open carry, but I don't leave a concealed weapon behind because the premises is not complying with the law. Every place I've been that has the metal detectors has the lock boxes including our county courthouse. OTOH, I think that's the only place in the county that has metal detectors.

I've carried openly in Arizona since the mid-70s and can't recall a time I was ever challenged or questioned about it.

Once in a while a little kid will say "Mom, that man has a gun," or "Are you a real cowboy?" The cowboy question is the tougher one. It's hard to explain to a 6-year-old the difference between a cowboy and a wrangler.

No city/county/township ordinance can be more restrictive than the state. That's our pre-emption law. The BIG exception are the reservations. Get the great book Arizona Gun Owners' Guide.
