I've been looking into buying a .22LR rifle and I'd like to hear your opinions and advice on whether my choice is correct or not. Let me give you a little bit of background. I used to do 10 meter air pistol competition using Steyr and Feinwerkbau pistols about 15 years ago. The only rifles I ever shot were air rifles when I was learing how to shoot many many years ago.
Recently I got interested into picking up shooting again, and I came across the AR style "tacticool" rifles (yes I know a bit shallow :))

This is what I'm hoping to be able to do:
1. Mostly 50 ft indoor target shooting, I'm in Portland metro, OR, and because of our weather up here and the distance/convenience of getting to the ranges, it's mostly going to be an indoor range (at least mostly in our rainy season.. a good 9 months of the year).
2. Inexpensive ammo, since I'm pretty much going to be learning so I'm hoping to not spend a lot of money on the ammo.
3. I am looking to do precision shooting rather than just having fun unloading the magazines :) As I said before I've done competition shooting with pistols (so I know at least some of the basics of that). There's that thrill one gets when putting all the holes on the target as close together as possible and in the bulls eye :)
4. I "may" use the rifle at some point to do smallbore competition at 50 or 100 yards (maybe even 200 yards at most, but I know that is really really pushing the limits).
5. A fun rifle that I may use for fun shooting at a buddy's ranch, rock chucks, ducks, plinking here and there.
6. Again I like the tactical look factor, not so important to me that it's a 'real' AR platform/experience (since I have not had that experience previously so it's pretty much meaningless to me).
7. As I said before precision and accuracy are important for what I want to use it mainly for.
8. Silhouette shooting sounds like fun too, but again if I use the rifle for that it won't be anything beyond possibly 100 yards.
9. I am not that price-sensitive (within reason of course!:) )

Anyway after doing quite a bit of research I had my choices narrowed down to
the following:
1. An HK 416D.
2. Remington 597 VTR.
3. Ruger SR-22,
4. S&W MP-15/22

After reading http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/tactical-22-rifles/ it looks like the HK's trigger is very heavy for any target shooting (without replacing it).
The Remington was the most accurate (people on the different forums seemed to agree with that) but everyone seemed to have some sort of FTF/FTE and as a newbie I don't want to have to deal with these issues, I want something reliable.
This leaves the Ruger and the S&W. From reading on forums, I gathered that these who want an AR experience will be better with the S&W, those who want accuracy are better with the Ruger. People keep pointing out that it is a 10/22 platform and not a real AR experience (again to me as a newbie I don't have this experience and don't know if I want it or not to satisfy the criteria above).
So at this point I am leaning towards the Ruger SR-22, I intend to fit it with iron sights (and to buy telescopic sights for outdoor longer range shooting), I plan on learning and using it for a year or more and then perhaps replace the trigger with a KIDD/Timney (or other) trigger that is lighter.

What do you guys think about this choice? Are there any other rifles that I need to consider? again it's mostly the cool factor + precision shooting.

I apologize for the long post, I tried capturing all the information I gathered in the past few weeks.

if you are leaning toward Ruger just go with their 10/22 and get one of the tactical looking models and save yourself another $300. It's the same if you asked me, and I would suggest the ruger to be honest.

look at Savage mk2 btvlss. accu trigger, pistol grip stock--NO iron sights, but
with my trashco 6x24 scope,no asprin is safe out to 50yrds. best bud,has same rifle in left hand model. same scope, rings, etc. can not tell rifles apart, when shooting by looking at target.

emmie

On that list I have tried number 3 and number 4 and I wouldn't get either of those.
Have you considered a SIG522?

Honestly, if you really want the tactical expierence. Go with a real AR. They are incredibly easy to shoot. Fun to shoot and will provide you with much more flexibility of use compared to a .22LR. Which are way cool, but only really good for plinking. Ppl don't buy AR patterned 22's for accuracy competitions. They buy them cause they are fun and cheap to shoot.

out of those I'd pick the smith and wesson

but I prefer the sig 522, it does not jam, I've put thousands of rounds through mine and it hasn't jammed, even when caked with carbon it only needed lube to keep running reliably. this is a rare thing in a rimfire.

I wouldn't pick the S&W 15-22......you will be disappointed with the accuracy it delivers. I have one and simply put, they are not all that accurate.

Sounds like you really need a bolt gun. CZ is the answer! If you MUST have an auto AR lookalike, get yourself an Armalite AR lower and a Tactical Solutions upper. You'll love it. You'll love the CZ, too!

Suggest looking at the Sig 522 with the combo barrel option and the SWAT foreend for the best of all worlds. You can switch out the standard barrel with the heavy barrel, and with the SWAT fore-end (1913 rail), you can try different sights based on the style of shooting you want to do.

My standard version of the 522 will do Tacti-cool (27 round magazines) and a with good .22 ammo still shoot 2" at 50.

What didn't you like about numbers 3 & 4? I looked at the SIG 522, didn't care much for the looks and it's accuracy wasn't as good as the other from reading posts on several forums.

I am hoping to start learning on a 22 rather than a real AR, I have thought about perhaps upgrading to an Anschutz in a couple of years if I get that good and that much into it, I'm looking for a starter 22 for target shooting (and fun) with a little room to grow.

That's what I read in several places, it gives you the AR experience but isn't really that accurate.

Just looked at the CZ, I like their 750 sniper but way out of my budget and probably way past my experience and skill at this point:) I am hoping for a 22 AR look-alike that is accurate with autoloading.

I think comparing it to the accuracy of the ones I mentioned it comes quite lacking, if I'm not mistaken the SR-22 was doing 0.62" @ 50 yards and the Remington was even less than that.

I guess I was fortunate on my purchase of the M&P 15-22 as mine will shoot more accurate than I am. Around 1.5 in at 50 yards with me using a DPMS micro dot sight and CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain round nose. Put around 1000 rounds down range and never had a hiccup as of today. Shooting clay targets at around 100 are quite fun with it so I can say I'm happy with the 15-22. YMMV

You've got a bit of a dilemma for most tacky-kewl 22s are not really very good target rifles. They are fantastic plinkers and fun guns, but will generally get their clocks cleaned buy a real target rifle. The only way I know of to get something like that is to build a 10/22. You will need a good barrel and trigger then try to find a dress up kit that fits your style. You may want to browse the tactical 10/22 picture thread at RimfireCentral for ideas.
