Hi,

I saw what I thought was an S&W Mod. 586 over the weekend at a local gun store.

When I got closer, I saw it was a Taurus Mod. 689. It has a 4" barrel with vent ribs, it has an attractive glossy biue finish and nice wood grips with the gold Taurus medallion. There is a very slight cylinder ring.

The owner let me dry fire it a few times. It has a very nice, smooth action, no grit I could feel.

All the chambers lined up with the forcing cone. There is just a tad of cylinder wobble, but nothing to get excited about. In my experience most revolvers have a little bit of cylinder wobble.

I woould say it's in VG+ condition. I wrote the serial number down and Taurus told me it was made in April of '92.

Whew! Now you know everything I do about it.

He's asking $395 for it. I figure he'll take $375.

I searched here, the Taurus forum and other forums and all I find is these older 689s are well liked by their owners and seem to be trouble free, for the most part.

And a lot of guys said they sold or traded theirs and very much regretted doing so. I don't know about you guys, but when I get a good firearm, I keep it.

But no one talks about accuracy or much of anything else about them.

I'm hoping to find some folks who will tell me about their first hand experience with the 689 and if they think $375 would be a fair price for this revolver.

Sorry for being so long winded.

Thanks,

mikem

Honestly, if you like it and like the way it handles why not buy it? There are plants of people that don’t like Taurus guns. There are plenty that do. Taurus must be doing something right or they wouldn’t exist now. Everyone I know that owns a Taurus revolver loves them but they always make excuses for them, like everyone else’s opinions should matter.

If you like it, but it.

A while back I bought a Taurus M44. I've always wanted a double action 44 magnum and a guy had one for sale cheap. I liked it so much that when my wife selected a Taurus M 66 over other similar pistols to replace her Colt Trooper MKIII .357 , which she thinks is to valuable to run magnums through anymore. I didn't balk at all and bought the Taurus without a second thought. She liked a couple other revolvers but they cost double what the Taurus cost. She really liked the way the Taurus felt in her hand and as far as shooting it , she said she'll make it work. She is happy and so am I, no regrets.

I have a 4" Taurus 689. It has an excellent trigger and is a very good shooter. It was made in 1990, IIRC. Only my very best Smiths have better triggers than my 689.

Here's a pic. I put a set of the eBay Thai hardwood grips on it.

I bought it used around the year 2000 or so. It had a very nice trigger when I got it, it's a little better now just from use, but I never had any work done on it.

I've owned eight or so Taurus revolvers in my life. Some have had great triggers, some poor, and some mediocre. As far as I can tell it's just kind of luck of the draw.
