Opinions appreciated - Walther PPQ

I actually liked the stock grip texture quite a bit. Didn't find it that bad at all. I put TALON grips on it regardless because I absolutely love the feel of them both in terms of ergos and traction, but I personally found it to be serviceable from the factory. YMMV.

The thing that kept me from getting the VP9 was that the PPQ edged it out in ergos and trigger ever so slightly by my personal estimation. The PPQ was also a bit cheaper and -- a big one here -- actually offered 17-round mags where as HK had no plans on the horizon for them which I found mind-boggling for a 9mm service pistol of the VP's generation.

Nice, you got a better deal than I did and I don't feel I got ripped off either! I have the M2. I was of the mind that all of my experience was with a "traditional" American-style mag release and Walther along with aftermarket support seemed to be trending toward the M2, so I just got the newer model. Sometimes I regret not getting the paddle release though as I've heard good things.

On the controllability aspect: this is actually one strike I'll put against the PPQ in my personal findings shooting it compared to other handguns in the same weight class using the same loads, I get a bit more muzzle flip and slightly slower follow-up shots. Nothing ground-breaking and something I could solve with practice, absolutely, but I've noticed it. I think it's a symptom of the high bore axis. In terms of accuracy and how it feels when shooting it's absolutely phenomenal, however, no doubt.

I’ve seen the P99AS at Cabelas before, but I only buy from them if they’re price matching or it’s on sale. Normal prices usually too high. Better yet new and used ones I routinely see on Armslist. I have never had an issue buying/selling/trading on there.

 

So I've heard, but I bought my gun long before this was announced.

 

Before I adopted a Walther Subcompact PPS M2 I had a PPQ. Like other Walthers I have owned its is an excellent pistol. It is reliable and accurate, and it has the one feature that Walther is famous for: great ergonomics. You might want to visit walthersforums,com. there you will find discussions about the full range of modern guns that make or made. There is a PPQ section. You do not have to register t read, but if you are going to buy a Walther, you wan to register. It is an excellent source os good info about Walthers.

You will find lots of posts about the PPQ. Reports of problems, modifications, praises, and some damning. You will find that the pistol get much more praise than disgruntled comment. I switched from other brans to Walther about three years ago. In am in the Walther family now. No need to go elsewhere for me.

 

Having bought a cherry P99 last week, I now have the trifecta..... P99AS, PPQ 5", and a PPS M2. I'm done buying for a while!

 

I had a PPQ a few years back, when they first came out. I personally thought the trigger was too light for a defensive gun. I have seen many people (on various gun forums) complain that they have fired a 2nd round at the range by accident. I've seen that come up over the years at the Walther Forum too.

As others have said, I like the P99 A/S more.

As for Gunbroker's best prices for a P99, do you always add about $70 (shiping plus FFL transfer cost) to those prices, before you compare with local gun prices-which requires a local tax?

I'm Also wondering whether most gun sales on Gunbroker now require a tax to be paid (?)--the new internet sales tax--in addition to FFL plus shipping.

 

It was about a week after I got the Q5, after wanting one from the day the came out, that they came out with the steel frame. I begged them to trade me, Walther that is, no dice. It's everything I wanted and more. Other than it not being the steel frame and now I think I'm after the Shadow 2. Yeah more $$$ but I hear they plan on making more. I have a collection of Walther and have never regretting any of them. My "James Bond" was my first. Fond memories.

 

I had a PPQ in .45ACP. It shot lights out! I could hit pretty much anything, offhand, at 25 yards, tennis ball size or larger, every shot. It was accurate as heck, and made me a much better shot than I normally am. Folks say it has a really NICE trigger...I say it had a really LIGHT trigger.

In the end, I sold it. Just too light of a trigger for a guy who’s shot Glocks with near stock triggers almost exclusively for the last 10 years. I had several unintentional double taps, and I cannot abide by that.

I could've trained myself to shoot it, but my old fingers are basically tuned to heavier triggers. Probably the same reason I’ve pretty much written off 1911’s and the like.

This isn’t a “such and such is better” post, it’s just a testimony that the PPQ is a fine gun, but definitely made for someone who prefers lighter triggers with short resets.

Just my honest opinion and personal preference...YMMV

 

I shot my Walther PPQ for the better part of a year before taking it out of my CCW rotation but during that time I replaced the stock plastic sights with Dawson precision fiber optic sights and I added Traction Grips because the top part of the frame that the thumb and index finger wrap around has a smooth texture with no grip and I wanted to keep the shape of the grip itself but just add more traction and the Traction Grips allow you to still swap out the back straps unlike the Talon Grips and they are almost half the price, hard to beat that.

Also, Canik TP9SF mags work in them.

 

I didn’t mention Gunbroker, I was talking about Armslist which is a private sale between law abiding citizens. No FFL no shipping no government theft. However when I do buy online (ex. Buds Gunshop) it’s typically free shipping and no tax and only $25 FFL fee. If I know what I want and can’t find on Armslist I go to gun deals.com and find the gun shop/dealer with best price and have it shipped to my FFL, again only $25 fee.

It's two hundred times easier to attract a knowledgeable and interested buyer via Armslist versus walking around our small gun shows.

I've made at least 15 deals buying or selling guns via Armslist TN: bought SAR-1, SKS, P6, P225 ('87) etc. Sold unused (from the CMP) Service Grade Special Garand etc.
My only AR was traded for a true Hungarian AMD-65 by TGI.

 

No problem Override, just wanted to clarify. I’ve probably used Armslist similar number of times and always had good experience. Meet some of the nicest people just as do at ranges and gun shows.
