Opinions on budget rifles.

Some bargain guns aren't bargains.

I have been testing some of the new econo-guns. In my frame of mind, this puts them in the $400 range. The new Mossberg Patriot is worth every dime. Especially the walnut model. My only gripe there is their sloppy bolt that can damage the comb of the stock, and the triggers have some scratchy creep.

The Marlins have a poor excuse for an extractor. I have had 3 come through my shop and 2 have had broken extractors in very short order.

The Savage axis has a plastic stock that just burns my buns. Maybe it is just me, but I doubt if you can find a stock that is any cheaper.

That leaves the Ruger American. All I can say is it is a Ruger. Nice trigger and all that I have had any dealings with, with the exception of my first Amercan rimfire, have been very accurate.

So, I have tested several rifles in several calibers and guess what I landed up with? I found a 700 ADL synthetic 243 for $339 on GB. It was a demo and I couldn't find a scratch on it. I stuck a 3X9 Monarch on it and killed 2 deer today with it.

The store that sold it to me had several other calibers for the same price too. Just goes to prove that there are bargains out there.
