This question's been asked an answered a billion times, and this won't be the last time either.. so bear with me ;D

I don't want to pay $400 for an optic, not right now and not for what I have in mind. I'm looking to get an optic for my vz. 58, and I expect to mount said optic on a picatinny rail incorporated into the handguard. I'm considering ordering a rail that goes in the traditional area, but price and practicality dissuade me.

I've never used an optic that far away from my eye before, so I'm not even familiar with how it's like, but if anyone can share their experience with such a setup, or if anyone can suggest optics for the job, I'd appreciate it :) I reckon those of you who tend towards AK style rifles would be most familiar with where I'm at right now.

Do you need magnification? If not, there should be several red dots that will fit your bill. What kind of price range are you looking at?

Even if you do, there are some options, but they get a little more sparse in that price range.

Anything between 0 and 3.5 power I suppose. I don't need magnification. Anything below $300 is an option, but I'll be hard pressed to buy a 0 or 1 power optic much over $200...

I don't know if I can find a Troy vz. 58 Battle Rail — I think they stopped making them — but I'm in love with the aesthetics of it... I think I'll wait 'til I find that rail to get my glass.

At that price, I think the Vortex Strike Fire would be a good choice. For slightly lower price (and probably quality) several of the manufacturers like Burris, Bushnell, and Primary Arms make similar red dots. Just get one with a 1x magnification.

There's not really a "0 power." I think that would be something you can't see through.

Leupold Scout scope but you are looking at $300. Sometimes it's better to buy something quality once than to have to replace junk. That's not to say that the RD sights mentioned are junk but I think the scout is what you want if you want magnification.

I think the best deal going with scout scopes is the Nikon for around $200. Just my two cents.

if you want some magnification and are looking at scout scopes, I would get the burris scout. You can pick it up for $230 shipped from midway with coupon code. If you don't want a scout scope, the red dot offerings are pretty neat. I'm partial to the bushnell tr25 myself ($70), but there are other options that cost more.

Heck you can give the scout setup a shot for 40 bucks with the ncstar pistolero pistol scopes. They are supposed to be pretty decent. I have a simmons pistol scope in scout configuration on my m1 carbine. It ruins the aesthetics, but by golly my eyes went and I needed to see the target. Scout scope works great for shots under 100yds for me.

Don't over look the Bushnell TRS-25 (and the Hi-Rise version).

I also just got a Burris FastFire III, but it's mounted on a SIG 1911-22.

When I got the TRS-25, I was looking for something inexpensive (with a good reputation / test results) for a poor man's 3-gun rig on a S&W 15-22 - the Bushnell is my secondary / close in optic, mounted at 1 to 2 o'clock.

I (and a few friends) have been pleased enough with them that I got another just to play around with on a Mossberg 590A1.

At the time, I was leaning towards the style of the Burris FastFire, but it seemed you were going to have to pay about double the price of the TRS-25 for a decent optic in that style.

I got the Burris @ Overstock.com for $188 delivered - had to sign up for their e-mails to get 10% off, which resulted in that price.
They currently are offering me 15% off, so I'm thinking 'bout buying another.

For your use, the TRS-25 is probably tougher? Burris does sell protectors for the FastFire III series, but they run around $60 on average.

EDIT: I'm not an AK man, but don't overlook the Bushnell Throw Down PCL?

Many good options have been mentioned, and I would also like to add the Sightmark Ultrashot. It is rated by the manufacturer to be able to handle the recoil of a 50 cal. BMG.
