What are your preferences for an affordable, durable, accurate scope for hunting with a centerfire rifle? (preferably >$300. the cheaper the better)?

the cheaper the better

This is usually an oxymoron when it comes to rifle scopes.

You can find a really nice leupold for around $300 or you could go with a used one like I did for around $200. That was a vari x III 2.5 x 8. Try the equipment exchange on ar15.com

Are you sure that is what you meant? > means greater than. Are you looking for a scope greater than or less than $300? There are many fine scopes greater than $300.

most of my scopes are in the less than $200 range. I think that Bushnell offers some great scopes in this price range.
The Elite 3200 series can be had for under $200 and the Banner series is a great scope for under $100

Optical quality for the money in thi range I'd go with a Burris FFII, the 3-9 will run around $200 and the 4.5-14 around $300. Much better glass quality and coatings than the low end Leupold and Nikon offerings. Also look at the Bushnell 3200 in this price range, and the mid-range Pentax.

I'm a big fan of the Nikon Monarch and Leupold VXIII, but the Nikon Prostaff and Leupold Rifleman do not live up to the reputation the companys command. There is a difference between buying a low priced scope, and a scope built down to a price.
