Ordered my first Underwood Ammo

Was looking at some heavy cast 38 special plus p stuff and saw that Buffalo Bore was roughly double the price of Underwood.

So now I have some heavy 38 special and a 9mm outdoorsman ammo coming in.....for less than one box of BB shipped from the manufacturer.

Any happy customers here?

 

Not sure. I am gonna try some for deer hunting with my .44 mag this year. Hear good stuff about it.

Asked them what was the best round for deer hunting and their customer service was very helpful.

 

If you like velocity you will like Underwood. You can get Gold Dot and Hornady bullets loaded to higher velocities than any factory rounds. Most everybody who chronos Underwood actually gets the advertised velocity. I’ve used a good bit of the 40S&W Bonded jhp (Gold Dots) and it feeds, functions and does what it’s supposed to in gel. OAL were very consistent, brass was Starline and primer depth was more consistent than some factory rounds. So far I’m happy with the couple hundred rounds I’ve used.

 

Years ago during The Great Ammo Panic I wound up buying a couple hundred rounds of Underwood Ammo including some 9mm +P+ (!). It was smoking hot, to the point where one of my guns couldn't handle it (too much slide velocity, ripped the case heads off). But it worked great in all my totally-stock handguns. I have found it to be pretty consistent and accurate as well. My only concern is that some of the loads may drive the bullets harder than they were designed to used but since I've never shot anything living with the stuff I can't say.

 

I recently got some of their .45 ACP 255gr +p. Haven't had a chance to try it yet.

 

Curious that small companies like Underwood and Buffalo Bore can produce ammo with higher velocity than the larger company's rounds and still still within the pressure limits of regular ammo.

Makes you wonder why the larger companies aren't doing it.

 

I purchased some of their 140 gr Extreme Penetrator ammo in 10mm. It's advertised at 1500 fps from the muzzle from a 5" barrel. It came in right on the money according to my LabRadar. It also was very accurate. Underwood makes good stuff.

I plan to buy some of the 115 gr 9mm Extreme Penetrators when there is a sale.

 

I tried Underwood Xtreme Defender 100 grain .38 Special (not +P) in 3 of my j frame revolvers. Two of them have 2” barrels and one is a 3” barrel.
The ammo shot reliably but accuracy wasn’t all that great. Since I only had one box I would not call that a fair assessment of the ammo but in my short barreled revolvers there was other SD ammo that is more accurate.
I may buy some more and try it in other guns but I won’t buy it for my j frames.

 

I'm way, way happier with Underwood, not so much with Doubletap. My purchases from both companies have been hunting rifle ammo. Underwood's offerings loaded with Nosler Accubond bullets I've had delivered are in .243 Winchester, .25-06 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, and .270 Winchester. Every order was promptly shipped, and correct at delivery, ordered directly from the Underwood web site.

Prior to that, I'd placed an order at Doubletap for two 20 round boxes of their. 25-06 Remington ammunition loaded with the 110 grain Nosler Accubond bullet, and two boxes of .243 Winchesterammo loaded with the 90 grain Swift Scirocco. A box was delivered that contained the. 243 ammo, but no .25-06 ammo, and the packing slip said the .25-06 ammo was out of stock and was on backorder. The ammo availability was listed as "2 - 3 days" when I placed my order and still showed that when the .243 ammo arrived. My follow up emails and phone calls (which always just went to voice mail) were ignored for over four months until after I told Doubletap I was going to open a case with my credit card company against them as my prior messages including saying to just refund my money had also been ignored. Suddenly I got a phone call telling me that materials for my order had been ordered by Doubletap and my ammunition would be manufactured and shipped soon after those materials were delivered to Doubletap. This actually stretched out for another 2 months with missed dates supplied by Doubletap until the final message that my order had been shoehorned into their production schedule and I eventually received two simple boxes of .25-06 Remington ammo loaded with the 110 grain Nosler Accubond bullet. No extra rare or Indiana Jones style quest for other companies like Federal, and Accubond, to procedure and manufacture.

Now, if you go to Doubletap's website a huge portion of the rifle ammunition on there simply shows "Out of Stock". That's what the .25-06 ammo I ordered had its status revised to after my order was finally shipped, and it's stayed that way for almost 2 solid years now. I really, really doubt I'll ever order any ammo in any cartridge, rifle or handgun, from Doubletap again. They certainly don't appear to care to actually supply so many of the products they list ever since then.

 

I've never ordered from DT. However in watching a lot of reviews it seems like their velocity numbers are inflated a bit. This is fairly standard for many ammo makers, but it bothers me. It also bothers me when considering their prices, and stories like yours.

I can not abide an internet retailer that holds your money with no actual idea when they'll be able to ship. It aggravates me to no end. A certain Texas based holster company will never get my money again when their delivery was seven weeks late, and my very reasonably limited inquiries were totally ignored.

I don't mind waiting, but internet sellers need to be realistic about wait times, and responsive to their customers.

 

I’ve bought from Underwood many times and never had an issue. I’ve been buying from them long enough to remember when it was cheaper to buy their 357 Sig ammunition than it was to buy big brand 357 Sig. I put a lot of those rounds through a Sig 2340.

I just ordered my first .44 mag and .357 mag ammo for deer and bear.

 

Fired both loads today. 38 hated it, fell out of the cylinder too so it's not that hot.9mm did ok but not great.

Not sure if I can chalk that down to the weird coating though

I order .38spl, .44spl, and .44mag from underwood. Good stuff. Their .38spl +P 158gr LSWCHP gets to 1000fps, which allows the HP to open dependably form a snubby.

Hopefully shoot a whitetail this year with my .44 mag Smith & Wesson with iron sights with this ammo.
