I'm going to be taking a road trip to Oregon from Texas this summer. With my Texas and Florida licenses, I can legally carry concealed all the way to Idaho. However once I hit Oregon, I can't. I can't get an Oregon license because I don't live in a contiguous state. So open carry is the only way I can legally carry at all.

After perusing packing.org and the Oregon carry laws, it appears open carry is legal everywhere except "public buildings", and two cities that have banned open carry (Portland and Beaverton). I'm not planning to go to either city, so that's not a problem.

However, I've got several questions. First, how common is open carry? More importantly, how do LEOs generally view it? How much, if at all, would I get hassled?

I wouldn't try open carry anywhere in the Willamette Valley, (between Eugene and Portland). The northern coast wouldn't be a good bet either during tourist season. In southern, central, and eastern Oregon, open carry isn't common outside of hunting season, but you can always explain that you are from Texas.:D

That being said, I helped research the issue of the Oregon carry laws. Remember two things:

1. Cops often have their own ideas on what the law is. I've spoken to several Portland officers and had to correct their thinkings on open carry. If a person has a CHL, under state law, they can carry openly despite any city or county laws against it.

2. Make absolutely damned sure that you carry a copy of the law on you. The law on prohibition against concealed carry specifically says that openly carrying in a holster is not against the law.

3. Remember that because you do not have a CHL, the "public buildings" rule applies to you. No school carry, or carrying into public buildings. Check the wording of the law, and keep a copy AT ALL TIMES.

That's all I have to offer.

Carrying open anywhere in the state is asking for harassment.

BTW Its not legal to shoot someone over a property crime as in Texas. ;)

I don't like open carry either. Has something about barrel envy. :D
