Howdy guys...
i posted a question elsewhere an wanted other [2nd opps] opinions an answers if possible..
i asked if the Kowa is capible of viewing a .22caliber hole out 500yrds, [ [my range max.] the two model i choose are....

[Kowa High Performace TSN-660-661 66mm Spotting Scopes with 20-60x Eyepiece TSE-Z9B
Kowa High Performace TSN-660-663 66mm 45 Degree Angled ED Spotting Scope TSN-663 w/ 20-60x Zoom Eyepiece TSE-Z9B]
an what is ED lense ? ?

as i will wait to reply here an the other post for more info.. it was recommended i should take a look at 'Orion ULX 66mm ED Zoom Spotting Scope'.
has any used or know about this brand ? all comments are welcome.!

thanks.... V.

I have an Orion 205 Starmax with 90 and 45 degree upright prisms a variety of lenses and a x-y and equatorial mount and use it for everything but range use. Great performer for stargazing, whale watching, and wildlife viewing. Optics are VERY bright, resolution is great, size is good and seems to be reasonably robust.

For range use I have an old beat up Bushnell with a table top tripod that I duct taped diving weights to to make it heavy. At 100 yard on a shoot n see I get great views.

Tutti, if you look at Orion's website (telescope.com), you'll find a bunch of educational articles that explain all the features. ED is a premium type of glass used in the lenses.

tutti...typically people that are shooting at 500 yards with .22s and using spotting scopes have pits. the target gets pulled down, and a large disk is placed on the target by sticking a spindle through both the disk and the bullet hole.

.22 holes at 500 is a tall order, especially if they are in the black. It's also going to be largely dependent on your own vision.

i use a 36X Weaver on a 700-.223
yes i can see holes a 300... 400 is very iffy depends on lite, heat waves... 500 forget it.. thus the reason for a spotter
i read the article at Orion.. still left with "not sure" the spotter 66 sound like a good deal but IF its not up to the task at 500... it would be [ i think ] a bit harder to sell then the Kowa ? actually that orian is more in my price range... but the Kowa is do-able
the 205 Starmax mite a bit much probable would have v.little field of view ?

i have found that yellow an day-glo green type paper [when you can find it] helps to see them little holes out past 300
i didn't know E D was a lenses coating " floriate " thanks i guess its top of the line ?

i like white paper taped to a cardboard an add little orange stickers to the white
lol's i don't have the luxury of pits.... i'm in a private an i can drive to the targets but it is a hassle if other shooters are there going cold also is a pain

thank for the replies i'm still open to suggestions an comments

I have several Orion scopes, including a 70mm that doubles as my spotter. Very happy with all of them, and their customer service is excellent.
