Ouch! That hurt.

.45-70 Contender pistol. I test fired one after we repaired it. :what: I shoot my PT145, not much bigger than an XDs, about every other range trip, usually about a box. I do find myself wanting a G19, but not due to recoil, yet.

I shot someone's .338 Lapua single-shot. One shot was more than enough but he was kind enough to give me a loaded round to keep. He said no one would believe I shot it otherwise.

I wouldn't say it hurts, but my LCP 2 can be pretty unpleasant to shoot more than a mag or two. I didn't buy it to be a range gun so it doesn't really bother me, and I only carry it when wardrobe doesn't allow me to carry my Shield.

LCR357 isn’t a lot of fun to shoot with 357. One cylinder was enough. I also shot a 10mm 1911 once, which had some stout recoil, but not painful like the revolver.

If I had a small revolver like that I would definitely carry 38 which wasn’t so bad.

AMT's "officer" sized .45acp--never liked it.
Liberator pistol (neither the smoothbore or the modern rifled replica) ouch!
Leader on the list remains that pepperbox COP derringer. Near as I can tell, it was designed to hurt the user.

I always thought that little XDs 45 would hurt to shoot. Especially with those grips.

I did own a COP in 357 that was a punisher and made my thumb so numb afterwards I was afraid I must had nerve damage. 38 spl loads were okay but it quickly developed reliability issues when the rotating firing pin failed to rotate.

I did shoot a friend's 500 Linebaugh built on a Ruger Vaquero frame. Twice. Not that bad, but I felt every bone in my body and even my teeth rattled. LOL

(Disclaimer: The following is my opion only and is not a personal attack on anyone else who feels otherwise.)

I don’t do sub-compact pistols or pocket handguns. As Clint Smith has stated in so many words: A handgun should be COMFORTING not comfortable. The work around needed to conceal a larger handgun is worth it to me. I shoot often and prefer a pistol with the mass necessary to abate the recoil of a relatively substantial caliber. That said, a Smith and Wesson Model 60 with .357 Magnum loads is akin to grabbing a yellow jacket nest IMHO.

I once shot a Winchester 94 Big Bore chamered in 458 Roger’s Express. One shot was all I needed to know that it wasn’t a fun gun to shoot.
Most don’t know the cartridge, 458 Roger’s Express. It’s a 458 Winchester Magnum cut down so that it will cycle in the 94 Big Bore. The rifle was rebuilt in Winchester’s custom shop in the early 80’s for a friend of my father in law.

I just fired a Springfield XDs in 45 Auto, and let me tell you, I would hate to put more then a few rounds down range.
I get to shoot a lot of guns, work related, and have found a few I really don;t care for. The XDs 45 has just been added to the list.
What guns have you found to be uncomfortable to shoot?

One of my co-workers had a 45acp XDs... He wanted to sell it to me so he could buy a 9mm S&W shield. We went to the range to shoot and so I could try his gun out and see if I wanted to buy it... I 100% agree with your analysis! Shockingly unpleasant to shoot. I'm not recoil averse but had zero interest in shooting more than one magazine, let alone owning it...

Ruger SP101.357 Mag. is a well built nice looking revolver. RO let me try one out and after firing three rounds I gave it back.

A friend had a PGO 12-gauge that was less than fun.
Aside from that, I haven't handled anything painful yet.
Then again, I pass up those screaming deals I find on .45LC/410 derringers or that pocket single-shot 7.62x39. No thanks.

I was bet $10 I wouldn't shoot my 12 ga. double barrel coach gun, both triggers one handed. The trigger guard cut my index finger to the bone. Guy didn't even pay me the $10.

When my dad was younger, a friend had a single barrel sawed off 12 ga that everyone was taking turns trying it out. When my dad gave it a try his buddy sneaked a high brass shell in it. When he shot it the lever to break the barrel open stuck in the web of his hand.

That makes me a little nauseated thinking about it. Gun practical jokes are not funny, or practical.

Hmmm. I put 130 rounds through my XDs-45 yesterday. Yeah you have to hold on to it, and it kicks hard, but I just don't find it unpleasant. I will admit though, I am thinking about carrying one in 9mm because of the higher round count.

The most unpleasant thing I own have have fired is the 375 H&H Mag. I did some horse trading with a retired Marine buddy (I am retired Navy). We have known each other and have riden our motorcycles across country together. Well I ended up with his dad's moose gun, a Browning Safari Grade in 375. Its a mid 50's Belgian production and it is a beautiful rifle. It is not in anyway, shape, fashion or form a fun rifle to shoot.

Yeah... I hear what you're saying but I probably should have elaborated. I find it difficult to put into words, but to me it's much more than the force of the recoil. (I rather enjoy powerful handguns, in both large and small frames)
I own a couple XDm's so was excited to try the XDs-45. It didn't leave my hand stinging or anything but I somehow found the experience unenjoyable... Maybe it had something to do with the width or shape of the frame... I don't know but i sort of equate it to my experience with Glocks - just not for me.

Fair enough. We all like what we like. It may have something to do with the trigger. The XDs trigger is garbage compared to the XDm and XD lines.

I worked part time at a gun shop / indoor range for 5 years while I was in my mid/late 20's.
The owner of the shop would let us employees buy some of the guns traded in at cost or a little over cost. A Mossberg 20 gauge Camper model complete with the pistol grip and camouflage holster type case came in on trade. I took to it out to the range and fired a couple rounds though it. Felt like I was hitting my hand with hammer. No thanks!

I briefly owned a S&W 640 and S&W 629 from that shop. Both quickly moved on to other owners. I could shoot maybe a box through each and then was done shooting for the day.

We had a scandium S&W 44 mag come through for the yearly manufacturer's shoot at the range. Knowing what pain is, I test fired that gun with some 44 Special Cowboy loads. It was pleasant.

Edit: Pic of the factory case that came with Mossberg Campers. I use to drool over this gun as kid looking at Service Merchandise catalogs

I believe that how a gun fits your hand is more important than a lot of people realize.
I've had a few 12 gauge PGOs over the years. A Filipino with a big, burly grip was a joy to shoot. The two Mossbergs, however, had narrow, ridge-backed grips that felt like I was holding on to a dull axe blade.
Definitely OUCH!
I had forgotten about that, but I had a Mossberg combo 12ga that came with a long and short barrel, as well as a regular stock and a pistol grip. I shot the gun just once with the pistol grip, took it off and put the regular stock back on it.

Sorry I might be late to the parade here.
But I am 70 and have more than a few injurys from the job and sports.
I shoot a XDS and a S&W shield in .45acp with no problems.
Fact is I always break in ANY social gun with at least 200 rounds or various ammo and no problems with either gun.
Only handgun that I have an issue with is the 2 S&W's that are 'scandium' and in .357 magnum caliber.
Smith & Wesson 340PD & 360PD ,weigh about 10 ounces at most
With normal 125 grain full house loads they make me wince when I shoot um
And I still managed a cylinder full [ 5 rounds ].
So I don't see why you have an issue with any .45acp handgun.
