I am a Resident of Virginia and am planning a trip to North Carolina over the weekend to check out a couple of sporting goods stores. Not really looking for any guns, but if I come accross something I really like...

I am pretty sure that I cannot legally purchase any handguns out of state, but I am not sure what the law is regarding shotguns or rifles. Any purchase, if legal would be through FFL.

Anybody know what the law is?

Thanks.

If the long gun is legal in your home state (and most are, in Virginia), then it's legal to purchase from a FFL anywhere in the US. That's just the Fed rule. Your state can have more restrictions (and Virginia probably doesn't).

Regards.

Well, not quite. You can purchase a handgun in any state (as far as the feds are concerned) but you have to receive it from an FFL in your home state.
