I recently moved to Athens GA. Good place to own whatever I want; questionable about keeping them handy. Anyway...

Being a nice climate, I'm looking for a place to shoot outdoors. The Firing Lane is a nice indoor facility (just a block from me), but hundreds of yards of open space is more my style.
Any decent ranges available in Athens-Clarke or Oconee counties? 100yds is fine, 1000yds is the dreamed-of ideal.

BTW: when does deer season start around here?

If you want to drive up into SC, there are a couple outdoor ranges around here, though they are both 100 yards. If you find one that is public and longer than 100, let me know...

There's a place southeast of Athens (on Highway 78, I think), where a dirt road veers left of the road. There is a sign with number you can call, but I cannot think of the name to save my life. I found a website on it once, but I've never been. Maybe worth driving down and taking a look, or maybe someone else knows the website.

Head over to Elbert County Gun Club outside of Elberton, GA. Non-members (visitors) are welcome to visit and shoot on Friday through Sunday between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. I'd call them or e-mail them first to get the info for joining and so they'll know you're coming. I think it's $65 a year plus a few hours of maintance work.

It's only about 40 minutes away. They have archery, skeet, trap, 50 yard pistol, 400 yard rifle, and various competions such as 1000 yard rifle.

Get on the ten loop heading north until you hit Athen's Technical College and turn right at the red light onto Highway 72. Go about 30 miles. As you get close to Elberton you will drive under a bridge and then immediately come to a red light. Turn left at the red light. Go to the second red light and turn left onto hight 77. There will be a large gas station and Pinnacle Bank on the left. You will turn between these two onto highway 77. Go about a mile on 77 and then bear to the right onto "New Ruckersvile Road"(it may be just "Ruckersvile Road" I can't remember which). Go about another mile and you should be there. It's on the right.

Hope this helps,
mole
