Do I need to use wads in my 1861 Springfield or my 3 band
Enfield. The Enfield manual mentions wads but the Springfield
came without a manual. I though when useing minie's, a wad was
    not required.

I have never used a wad with Minie balls. They were not intended to be used with a wad or with a patch.

I have used those felt lubricated wads under the ball in a percussion revolver. They seem to work OK to provide lubrication and a seal without the mess of grease.

I'd think that using a wad with a Minne could actually interfere with the skirt expanding and possibly preventing the bullet from gripping the rifling correctly.

I thought the same thing Mike. I'm not sure why the Enfield manual suggested useing wads,as far as manuals go, it's pretty crappy.
I really enjoy shooting the massive 58 cal minies though.
