Own An LNL AP Press? Seeking Serial Numbers & Purchase Date Info For Data Base

David - No need to upgrade if your wire-eject is working well for you and you don't need to use the 5th station for non-hornady FCD's. I upgraded because my 223's, .380's, 9mm, .40's, and .45's, would wedge under the spring and get slung across the room. I also sacrificed a .40 FCD by grinding the end so it would clear the spring and didn't want to do that with all of my dies.

Warmest Regards,
Richard

Hey folks,

I keep adding data when folks report it on the threads and when they semd me a PM. The list below is slowly getting longer and represents the latest information reported thus far:

What follows are additional comments made by the members that do not fit well with the listing above, but they are of interest in their own right:

---Canuck, IL - Reports that change in primer system came at serial number 7,000.
---Walkalong - Has a Pro-Jector with serial # 18,396. He also says the $29 he spent for his EZ-Ject upgrade was worth the expense.
---Randy - States that Hornady started offering the EZ-Ject system in Jan 2009. Serial number unknown. Converted his to EZ-Ject in June 09.
---Dodge DeBoulet - Indicated his press came with 3 powder drop tubes, two primer slides & seating punches; also indicated his powder screw tubes are not micrometer style which seems to be an add on purchase.
---Ole Farmer Buck - Hornady told him they started the EZ-Ject system with serial number 15,000, so his press at 16,153 is one of the first presses with EZ-Ject. He also reports he just got his 2nd LNL press Jan 2010.
---RNG (Richard) Upgraded to EZ-Ject in October 2009 and considers it money well spent.
---Gryffydd - Powder measure comes with baffle now. Purchased from Graff's.
---1911pewpew - Purchased from Midway.
---Fella5 (Scott) - Purchased from Midway.
---Mongoose - Hornady started offering the EZject in Jan '09--I bought my LnL in December '08 and it has the EZject

As long as the folks keep providing the data, I will keep recording same. Also remember that I keep it on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet which I can send to anyone who wants it via E-Mail.

Best wishes,

Well old age is getting to me. I believe they say its your memory that goes first. :scrutiny: I was wrong on my serial number. Missed it by 985. The Dec 2008 model # is 16,153 and the new (1/27 or so/2010 is 24,427.

Regarding the Randy comment two posts back that says Hornady started offering the EZject in Jan '09--I bought my LnL in December '08 and it has the EZject.

Hey Mongoose,

I added the EZ-Ject to your information, and from what was reported, it would seem that you and Ole Farmer Buck both had EZ-Ject systems in December of 2008. So far, it would seem the EZ-Ject started sometime between August and December of 2008. In all fairness to Randy, sometimes the things you hear from folks at Hornady may not always be accurate. I talked with a Hornady fellow last year who "was pretty sure" the LNL AP did not come on the market until about 2005, and that was obviously wrong.

It is obvious that not all folks gave all of their serial numbers and not all indicated whether it was a wire eject or an EZ-Ject, but I think it is pretty safe to say the EZ-Ject system was introduced sometime between serial numbers 14,281 and 16,153 which include the Aug to Dec 2008 time frame. Ole Farmer Buck reported that Hornady told him they started the EZ-Ject system with serial number 15,000. While we don't have any information from the owner of press number 15,000, that information would fit with the information reported by the owners of press 14,281 (Wire Eject) and press 16,153 (the first EZ-Ject reported so far).

I can't believe that only two of us so far have reported purchases before 2008: Canuck IL (8,866) in 2005 and my own (1,525) in 1997. To the best of my knowledge, there have been three main changes to the LNL AP since 1997: a change to the primer system that Canuck IL says took place about serial number 7,000 (sometime before May 2005), the change from the wire eject case kicker to the EZ-Ject system (sometime between Aug & Dec of 2008), and some changes to the case activated powder dispenser (I have no information on times for the powder measure changes).

The powder dispenser changes actually include changes to the lower unit linkage as well as changes to the metering system. My really old press included two different sized micrometer screw setting units that fit into one rotor. Today it seems that some folks get two rotors and no micrometer type adjustment features. Can anyone explain the differences to the powder measuring system over the years?

Also, does anyone know of any other changes made to the LNL AP since they started making them? Let me know, and I will keep a record of what I learn.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey David, i could be wrong on the number they changed too. But i do know they told me 15,000 or 16,000. I will find out for sure tomorrow. I have the ext. # for the guy (and gal) that would know. The reason i'm wondering is the fact that when i got mine, i knew there wasnt very many of the new style ahead of it. Sorry for the old age syndrome.

Yep. Leave it to old buck here. I called and found out it was 16,000 when they started. So it looks like i got the 153rd after the change.

Hey folks,

I have added the latest information provided on LNL presses, and the list now has a total of 38 presses reported by owners, some of whom have provided additional information included at the end of the list.

---Thorn originally had wire eject, but has upgraded to EZ-Ject subplate.
---Smith627 has upgraded to EZ-Ject - problems with 9mm. Has problems seating primers low enough
---Sommerled reports his oldest (2001) LNL press has the old primer system with the brass tubes where you remove the whole steel containment sleeve. I prefer this older style. It also has the primer plunger with thumb nut that is a poor design, hard to tighten and comes loose alot. Also the return spring for the powder measure pulls down at an angle with this older press and it sometimes binds up if not dry lubed. The wire ejects work most of the time when I occaisionaly rub a little die sizing wax on the contact area with a Qtip.
---Robctwo reports he has put 117,800 rounds through it to March 2010 and that it was rebuilt for cost of shipping one way at around 85,000.

I will keep adding data to the list as long as folks continue reporting information via thread data, PM, or E-Mail. Of all the owners reporting, only three or four of them report purchases prior to 2008. Obviously, Hornady has sold a whole lot of these presses in the past two years even though they have been making them since 1997. Presses purchased in 2001 and 2004 were just recently reported, and I hope more of these older presses and comments will be reported.

For a challenge of sorts, allow me to point out that I still have the oldest press (serial #1,525) reported so far, so how about some of those even older folks check their serial numbers and purchase dates and report them? Come on, let's see some folks report some of those LNLs with serial numbers lower than 1,525. I am not the only old guy here.

Also remember that I keep this LNL press info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file to anyone who wants it via E-Mail.

Dave Wile

Interesting, David. Here's mine.

August 2001 wire eject # 04279
Oct 2008 wire eject #12,056
Nov 2009 EZject #21,761

They sure sold a lot in the last couple years! 5 people use my "reloading center" and the LNL all work well.

Hey Sommerled,

Thanks for the information. You can see that I have added your information by editing my last post. If anyone has sent me information and it is not listed on my last post, please let me know I missed it, and I will make an update.

Best wishes,

Hey Sommerled,

With your three presses from 2001, 2008, and 2009, you certainly seem to have seen some of the differences Hornady has made over the years. I noticed in your last post you indicated you liked the older primer system better than the newer systems.

My LNL is a very early one, so I don't know what the newer primer systems are like. However, my old primer system has been working just fine since I first got the press in 1997. Almost immediately with my old primer system, I found three things to do to keep things working well:

1. Keep the primer shuttle track really clean and use graphite on the shuttle and in the shuttle track to keep the shuttle movement slick.

2. I have filed the sharp edges and then polished the tops of the two different sized primer seater punches which helps keeping the primer shuttle from catching on the punches.

3. Using the primer tubes as issued, the last two or three primers failed to feed into the shuttle. This was also a common problem with my old RCBS single stage auto primer feeding system and both were solved as follows: after filling the primer tube and loading same on press, place a properly sized wood dowel inside the primer tube to add a little weight to the last few primers which will then feed into the shuttle. You can also mark the wood dowels to show when the primer level is empty as well as having just a few more to go.

I don't know what they did to "improve" the primer system that came with my old press - it seems to work perfectly for me. I don't have the newer system, so I cannot compare them. There are some plastic parts at the bottom of my old system that I used to worry about breaking. Nothing has broken in nearly 13 years of use, so I guess I shouldn't worry too much.

I also notice you mention your measure sometimes binding because of the return spring angle. So far, I have not experienced this problem with mine, but my powder measure may be different than yours.

I never have a problem with the wire eject, but I never have to use the 5th die station. I don't use a powder cop and never felt I needed one.

I am not a big fan of the LNL bushing system (nor the Dillon tool head concept) because I frequently change die settings for seating and expanding, and I never minded changing dies and making adjustments. For those who like the quick change systems, that is no problem with me. In any case, I think Hornady has hit a homerun with the LNL AP.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Serial No. 24067 with EZ-Ject
I was looking at the list and wondered what was going on. The list shows yours with the same serial # as my last one. 24,427 Couldnt figure out how that could be. Looks like David put the wrong number for you.

Hey Ole Farmer Buck,

Your are absolutely correct, I made a mistake on my update for Mmorris. However, I absolutely swear that the entries on my Excel file were entered corrrectly. I am no longer able to change my last post listing, so I will add a new post after this one with the correction to Mmorris' serial number.

I still wish we could get more data from the older folks with the older serial numbers. Maybe most of us have already gone for the dirt nap?

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey folks,

I have added the latest information provided on LNL presses, and the list now has a total of 39 presses reported by owners, some of whom have provided additional information included at the end of the list. I am also making a correction to Mmorris' serial number. I think I have it right now, but if someone sees other errors, let me know, and I will make the change.

Hey Wilburt,

Looking at the serial numbers given along with their purchase dates, they seem to follow in fairly close order. Yours seems to be out of place a bit, but that is easily understood if you bought a display model that may have been sitting for some months. I would not be surprised to find some display models have been in place for several years.

How are you coming along with yours now? I think I remember you having some trouble at first, and I hope things are all OK now. My wife and I are back down in Florida again for the next month or so, but I would be happy to try to answer what I can without having my press on hand. Mine is still the original press without any new improvements, and it works real well.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey Mike,

No problem, partner. I changed your info in my Excel file, and I changed it in the list above. Your press is now #38 out of 39 reported. If any other changes need to be made, just let me know.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile
