Howdy, everyone,

I have a Springfield Armory "Mil-Spec" 1911 that my father gave to me as my high-school graduation present, and before he lets me take it up to Virginia Tech with me, he wants me to check and make sure that Virginia doesn't have any silly laws that I might be breaking.

I'm 19; is there any Virginia law which prohibits the ownership of handguns by those less than 21 years of age?

Thanks in advance, y'all.

No, you're fine. But you won't be able to buy ammo until you're 21. You'll have to have some else buy it for you.

It is illegal:uhoh: but you could tell the wally world clerk that your .45 ACP is for a rifle.

Not that I am suggesting it or anything. :uhoh:

Not if he got himself something like a Marlin Camp .45. Or one of them semi auto Tommy Guns.

Any other .45 ACP rifles out there he should consider buying to ensure a well rounded arsenal and fully legal ammo purchases???

Welcome to Virginia Tech

Congratulations on choosing the best university available. It'll be five or six of the best years of your life.

No firearms allowed on campus :cuss: . From the student handbook "Unauthorized possession, storage, or control of firearms and weapons on university property is prohibited, including storing weapons in vehicles on campus as well as in the residence halls. A weapons storage program is available. Interested persons should contact the Virginia Tech Police (Sterrett Facilities Complex, 231-6411)."

It sucks not having your own stuff around, but I wouldn't risk it. Live on campus your freshman year and get your own apartment for your sophmore year and it won't be an issue. Good luck and Go Hokies

Like above ^^^^^^^^

I dont know about Virginia, but most campuses have a "Safe Area" where guns can be safely stored with the campus police. They allow the gun to be checked out for sporting purposes (going to the range), but must be transported on and off campus via car. Check out if they have a similar program (looks like they do). Also, depending on the state and school rules, you may be allowed to keep the gun unloaded in your trunk as long as it stays there while on campus (doesnt look like they allow that there). As for the under 21 thing, if your father or anyone buys the ammo with the intent to give it to you, it is illegal unless you are in a shooting club or something. (quick join a shooting club/sport shooting association)! If you actually buy a .45 rifle, then I dont think you would be doing anything illegal when purchasing .45 ammo, but then you have to figure out what to do with the rifle. Loading the rifle ammo in the pistol may be a violation though as you intended to circumvent the law. I'd call the school Police Department and check their policies because your definately not the first one to have this problem. You could also find a bank near campus and rent a safety deposit box if you dont trust the campus to hold your goods, that way it is close by, but not violating school rules. If your worried about safety on campus, check the school and state ccw laws. Down here in FL, you can carry a stun gun/mace on campus with a CCW if you are a registered student.

Lastly, just live off campus and dont take the gun to school and all will be good!
I'd definately check out the link the previous posted left!

An old Hokie checks in

It's been over thirty years since my Tech days in Rasche Hall. We would drive to an abandoned mine area outside of B'burg to shoot. The Corps ran a few FTXs there also. Beautiful area, enjoy your time there. Work hard...make your dad proud.

You can't "own" a handgun under 21, just like my son doesn't own his...yet...but it's his as far as we're concerned.
