Went to the range today with a bag of pistols, in the mix was my Ruger P-95, 9mm. I bought it brand new and have fired about 150 rounds of factory ball ammo to date. I clean it after every range session. I have used Remington ammo in the past and today I bought a box of Fiocchi FMJ 115gn.

I had 2 failures to extract out of 30 rounds, so I stopped shooting the Ruger. Here is what happened:

The fired round would remain in the chamber and the next round in the mag had the bullet nose contacting the base of the fired, unextracted case. I left the unextracted case in the chamber, pushed the mag back and then tried to use as little force as possible to remove the unextracted case. Note I keep using the word "unextracted". This is because the case would practically fall out of the chamber, both times, therefore the chamber is not rough.

There was gunsmith at the range and I asked him to take a look. He said it was the case, that Fiocchi uses a laquer coating (to prevent corrosion). This laquer supposedly allows the extractor hook to "slip" off the rim, kinda' like a lubricant.

I think the extractor spring is weak. I hate to send this gun back to Ruger since I "assume" I will have to pay the shipping charges at least one way.

I am thinking of using a Wolff extractor spring, but I'm not sure.

Suggestions?

Have you lubed it each time before shooting? When my P95 was new, the plastic was "grabby" on the slide unless I kept it wet. When it wore a little, this stopped.

First there's no spring under that extractor. The extractor is a one piece steel unit that isn't powered by a spring. It's "springy" but no actual spring.

The extractor is a part you'll have to get from Ruger, though and it's classified as a "factory fitted" part. You can call Ruger and tell them your problem and ask for a pre-paid shipper. They will send you one and you should be covered both ways on shipping. Before I did that though I'd try a different brand of ammo.

Edited to add: You could also pull the extractor and give it a thorough cleaning/degreasing and then put it back in yourself. They pop out and reinstall very easily I've found. Small screwdriver under the claw push outward and forward and it's out. Slip it back in and snap in place.

Rantingredneck,

Thank you for the info, this is helpful. I will pull the extractor, clean it, inspect it, and reinstall. I will try different ammo before I spend Ruger's money.

And yes, I lube it. I have always applied a small amount of oil to the rails of all my autos, Glocks, Rugers, Colts, etc.

No. This is brass case ammo (Fiocchi). I have not and will not shoot Wolf ammo. I have heard and read to many negative comments on Wolf stuff.

I value reliability over accuracy.

Picture is worth a thousand words....

Here is a pic of the extractor on my P89 removed.

The little hole you see in the slide is where the post on the extractor snaps in. That and the flexing of the steel are what hold the extractor in place and give it the tension to extract the casings. If some gunk got in that it might make it fail. That being said the first time I removed mine was two days ago after about 4K rounds or so in 12 years.

As I said in the earlier post if you take a small screwdriver and push outward from the frame on the extractor and then slide it forward it will slip out. Use the screwdriver on the front of the extractor to push it back in. It will audibly "click" into place.

I found this out a couple of nights ago when I asked about replacing the firing pin spring on my P90. Removing the extractor is the first step to the firing pin. :) One of our fellow members was most helpful in telling me how to do this.

Sorry for the blurry pic BTW. Best I can do sometimes with my crap camera and photography skills (or lack thereof).

Brownells has a good schematic of the P95DC here.

He said it was the case, that Fiocchi uses a laquer coating (to prevent corrosion).

Fiocchi stuff in maroon box? These things don't have lacquer coated. I declare BS on that statement. Fiocchi is good stuff, he must be confused with Wolf ammo.

You can call Ruger and tell them your problem and ask for a pre-paid shipper

Good luck with that, getting prepaid. They sure didn't give me one on this one.. But send it back anyway, my KP95 never had that problem though it was not great in accuracy.

Seems as if it can be hit or miss. If you are persistent I bet you'll get one.
