I picked up a nice S&W99 in 9mm and have my eye on a nice P22 (5" barrel). After reading a bit, these seem a little finicky in ammo. I already have a S&W 41 for bullseye, but was thinking of picking up the P22 for $399.00. What do you think is it worth it?

they sell for alot less that that around here. i have one that i shoot more than any other gun that i own. it has around 22k rounds through it. it's getting sloppy though.
they aren't very accurate and aren't the most reliable, but they sure are fun to shoot.

distra - You could get a new Ruger 22/45 for less than the money you would spend on the P22. At 5k+ rds, mine is barely broken in.

I have one and it is fun. I am planning to get a Buckmark -- was looking at one at the store today and it is much nicer. Larger grip, better ergonomics.
The P22 has a zinc slide. This is OK because it doesn't have to contain the pressure but it is prone to quick wear.
The P22s are really Umarex -- in fact I have a blank firing P22 that straight out SAYS Umarex and it seems as though it's made from some of the same parts as the Walther.
The P22 is fun as earlier posters say but it isn't up to the standard of real Walthers and is just not in the same class as the Buckmark and other knowm, well made semi auto .22 handguns.

I just traded mine for a Colt Trooper MK III .22. For the money I would much rather have a Ruger MK III than a P22.

The P22 is a plinker at best, and not a very good one -- and yes, a lot of folks love theirs and think that they a fun fun fun. They also have slides that are made of pot metal.
Before you make the leap, take a read through the P22 Bible on the RimfireCentral website before you decide to make a purchase. From my perspective, you'll do far better with a Browning Buck Mark or a Ruger or a Colt. (By the way, I own two P22s.)

You better hope that no cops hang out here... because that's flat-out stealing.
There are very few autoloading 22s that even match, let alone surpass, the quality and accuracy of that MKIII Trooper. And the P22, as fun as it is, ain't one of 'em.
Not even close.

i have that p22 and my fiance has a pink phony carbon fiber one (i had to buy it so that she wouldn't steal mine). i have a ruger mk1 standard 6 inch that runs circles around the p22 for accuracy, but is not near as fun to shoot.

If you have a choice, I would suggest the 3.5" barrel over the 5" P22. The longer pistol is not measurably more accurate, less handy and a good bit uglier. And it will never match a Ruger MK of any kind or a Buckmark for target shooting.
The little gun, even with its pot-metal slide, finicky taste in ammo and lately inflated price tag, is really a lot of fun. Mine has digested 5,000 rounds with nothing but regular cleaning.
I've read about breaking slides, crappy mags and horrid accuracy, just never experienced any of those myself.

$399 there are better choices, Bud's Guns Paris KY had the 3.5in Walther P22 for $279 at the gun show in Lexington, almost what it's worth. Add about $150 and get a CZ Kadet. At first glance the P22 looks like a good CCW but the rimmed .22lr is a poor choice for a pistol, ok to CC .22lr in revolver. The P22 is an ok pistol, but the $399 price is a ripoff, just my 2 cents.

Mine didn't, it ran perfectly out of the box.
Some people had trouble. One common early problem was the magazine; later versions had a slight alteration in the magazine which solved an early feed problem.
What's been said here is accurate; the P22 has a potmetal, AKA zinc slide. The barrel has a endcap that screws on and could vibrate loose over time.
It's a nice little gun, but I agree with others; the Buckmark, a S&W, a Colt ... they are all better, if for no other reason than the material of the slide.

the p22 doesn't need all of that to run. mine hasn't had anything done to it and runs fine as long as you clean it every 300-400 rounds.
there are hundreds of thousands p22's out there. just like with any other gun, you will only hear the opinions of people that had reliability issues or had some other personal problem with theirs.
mine has been trouble free.

The P22 is the worst of the .22s but the most fun to shoot. Ruger, S&W, Browning, Colt and even the Beretta Neo is a better gun but none of them are as much fun to plink with.
For $400? No way! Get a Buckmark or a Ruger. If you want a fun gun, grab a 22/45. They're cheap, reliable and accurate.
I just got a used 22/45 4" with adjustable sights for $145, and it is VERY fun to shoot -- but it's also accurate enough for bullseye. It's not picky about ammo, and it needn't be cleaned too often. (It's my third Ruger .22 pistol, after a long slabside target 22/45 and a scoped Mark II Target gunsmithed, modified and set up specifically for bullseye, so I finally know how to reassemble the damn things.)

I bought one for the wife a while back and I had almost every possible malfunction you can imagine with it at some point. I wound up selling it for about $150 loss, probably more. And I still feel sorry for whoever bought it.

Pick it up! It is a great way to practice clearing jams.
Mine was finicky even when clean. Ultimately, I didn't like the zinc slide.
For that price you can pick up a used 22/45 and get the tactical solutions upper.

My P22 runs just fine out of the box. It doesn't like T-bolts, but eats up everything else. However, the price should be closer to $300. Whether you like the P22 or not, $399 is too much.

I would agree, that seems a bit steep for a P22 and there are better choices for that kind of money.
I had a P22 back when they first came out and got rid of it a few months later. It was fun to shoot and kind of neat looking but that's about it. I sold mine and bought a Ruger 22/45 and was much happier.
Keep in mind that for all the bad reviews out there on these things there are plenty of happy P22 owners. As long as you find an ammo that works and if you're just looking for a fun plinker then I say go ahead and buy one, just don't overpay.
So I took THR advise and picked up a 22/45 5.5" barrel for $249.00 with 3 mags, box and scope mount. I don't think it was a bad deal considering these models are going for $250+ on GunBroker.com. So what kind of fun mods can be done to this little 22? I saw a 3" barrel that would be cool, but can't seem to find it on the Tactical Solutions site. Anyone know where I could pick one of those up?
