Patience

When you ignore somebody you can't see what the ignored person said unless somebody quotes them. They can still see what you say tho.

 

This forum, in my opinion as sadly, most other facits of our daily lives has become fairly intolerant, as if you dont agee with me, then your stupid, or a boomer or some such stupidity. It requires as stated patience to reply or in some cases equip someone with factual information. This then appears in most, but not all cases, to act like someones getting peed on. Ok, if rational discussion isn't gtting it then what next? Other folks naturally jump in and sensing the tone or seeing a sacred calf getting skewered, tend to respond according to their opinions or in some cases outright hatred of some inanimate object get really butt hurt. Not much one can do to prevent that but try to be reasonable, usually doesn't work, but I believe it's still worth a limited try. Since 07 when I first came around here I have had occasionally, some heated discussions, reacting as predictably butt hurt over my sacred calfs or defending a truthful bit of information. Im pretty much done with that now and finally after all this time pushed the ignore button on some dude. And pretty soon will again, as Im really tired of being called or infered to as some fud boomer old guy or whatever else our moderators seem to think is funny without, wait for it, " moderating " the postings to correct these things. It's an uphill climb and I personally congratulate those who remain calm and continue with out the retoric and bashing.

 

I think the worst transgression(s) are/is name calling for sure, but "you obviously", or/and " obviously don't know" or "obviously have never" or "you are" are second place. ("you are" usually followed by name calling) Other than that, I can tolerate anything else.

Moderating is a fine line to walk for sure, too little or too much are both problematic.

 

As a former High School teacher, no question or statement by a student should be considered "stupid!" Rather it is uninformed or misinformed and it is our sacred calling to correct the misinformation before it is spread to others! Silence is tacit agreement!

 

That's funny, there's at least three of us served our time in a High School. Wouldn't trade it for anything else. One thing about teen-agers though, impossible to ignore. !

 

This is a drift from the OP's subject, sort of, but I am reminded of a song lyric from Ian Anderson of the group Jethro Tull: "It's hard to find your equilibrium, when you are looking at each other down a barrel of a gun." Sometimes it is better to check your emotions before responding when the temperature is high.

 

I remember that I placed a member on "ignore" after he posted that I needed to learn how to stalk deer.
This is after 45 deer seasons with muzzleloaders, shotguns, handguns, and recurve bows. I'm certain that I have tagged over 50 deer.

Had a fellow tell me a .357 wouldn't take down a ram silhouette with a 110 grain bullet at a 100 meters. Was glad he told me that, especially after the thing went down otherwise I wouldn't have tried it. Silly me.

 

Well, I'm another retired High School(Special Ed) teacher. In regards to responding or "ignoring" an ill mannered post, I will add this. I am frequently on several religious oriented sites and inevitibly some "troll" will jump in with provocative and insulting comments. With the option of a "Like" or "Unlike" button, I have never seen anyone hit the "Unlike" button on the troll. I believe this is a dignified way to ignore such immature nonsense, and I will bet you it drives the troll nuts to be completely ignored.

 

Thats been my experience, the one person that I ignored was extremely argumentative and took a personal distaste to me in particular for some reason. He lasted about 8 months here before his account got deleted. It was the only time I genuinely didn't enjoy getting on because he was in every post going on like he knew more than anyone else here and it just ruined my experience totally Jeb Stuart was his handle, yall may remember him

 

Dang...this must be the "Retired High School Teacher's" graveyard! But seriously, that's kind of interesting.

 

I think this Forum is the most decent and courteous one I have been on. I can't remember being sniped at once. A lot of Forums turn nasty due to politics or gun snobbery.

Kinda off related, kinda related; this thread is not related to black powder shooting in any way but my story here is related to both this threads intended subjects.
I was once a teenager (wow, can you believe that?) and a very interested, passionate teen especially about black powder weapons. Yes, that's where my interest started. So much so that alot of my early artwork is related to this type of stuff.

I signed up on a black powder forum (not naming which one, nor any of the people involved) after discovering these people were equally passionate about black powder as I was. I was 16 at the time, most of the people were at least 40 or older. No problem, expect the fact that teens, especially teens raised on the internet can be a little, weird. I was weird. I was a weird teen with a weird sense of humor. And trust me it changes every few years, the kids just younger than me in the teenage years right now are from a different world. I was raised in chat rooms and forums, the kids today have their tik toks; It is not the same.

I stuck out like a sore thumb on their site. My sense of humor was different, my vernacular was different. Im not excusing my behavior either; indeed it is off putting when you have a squeezy voiced teen trying to insert into your mature hobby group. We've had them on this site (THR) before and its the same deal, they just stick out. Nonetheless we answer their questions with honesty and courtesy.
It hit a climax when one day I chose a colorful pfp (alot like the one I have right now, I made it myself) and they didn't like it. They thought it was too childish on their adult site, and they called me a "troll". For those unfamiliar, a troll means someone who is purposely intending to cause mischief

Like this. Someone who is only there for comedic value, even if it makes only themselves laugh. But not everyone who is annoying is a troll, sometimes they are someone who has trouble being respectful, or someone who never learned how to communicate controversial opinions properly.
They called me one, and I tried to defend myself explaining that no, I am here because I am passionate about black powder shooting, etc. etc. but they didn't believe me. Eventually they kicked me off the site, banned me, and I contacted one of the dudes who co-owned the site on another website and he sided with his buddies. It was a very interesting experience for me at the time. After about a month I let it all go, but I felt so pissed that I finally met some people who shared the same hobby that I do but they rejected me and didn't even give me a chance to explain myself. Goes to show, I believe we owe everyone a explanation. If their behavior afterwards still doesn't change, not much we can do but give them the hammer.

So that's my story and experience with stubborn people online, related to forum use. The reason I like this site so much is because everyone is so respectful, it's well moderated and the topics stay exclusive to just guns. No politics (unless it's related), no SHTF panic threads, just passionate people discussing firearms. I've been on other gun forums and they all look chaotic, compared to this one.

 

I think I know the forum you're referring to. The owner is a real jerk. I was a member there for years and I finally got tired of the BS and cronyism.

 

Those who know, know. Yeah them kicking me out was probably for the better anyway

I try to be helpful, courteous, and keep my temper in check, but do fall off the wagon sometimes. I wonder if anyone blocks me.

I personally have just one guy blocked. He's very knowledgeable in his area, but is so needlessly rude that his posts detract from my enjoyment of what is generally a really great website.

 

Yep, sometimes folks that don't like you don't even realize what a great gift they have given you by pushing you out.
Think of all the time you have been able to spend on something better than dealing with those folks.

You know, I'm having enough trouble ignoring Driftwood's .44 Colt...and Straw, you ain't helping much. It's getting to me. I can't stand looking at them things. Then I'm checking out prices on the replicas last night, and they are much lower priced than I thought. If you guys don't stop, I'm moving one up to the top of my want list...which due to my fickle wants is always changing. Is there a button that says: "ignore enablers"??? Good grief.

So Straw Hat, are those two pistols .38's? I see they don't have the rebated frame or cylinder. Grips "look" more "Navy" but can't really tell from a pic. I assume they are in .38. ? Dang. I wish I could ignore myself sometimes.
