I am currently writing my persuasive speech for my Public Speaking class in college about the conflict between gun control laws and the purpose and intent of the second ammendment.

Just wondering if anyone had any good websites, articles, or books to recommend to me for it.
One specific subject I am looking for info on is Australia's gun control laws and the effects its had on the nation. However, I would appriciate info or recommendations for pretty much anything related.

Thanks for the help

I have a good counter for the old "2a isn't relevant because they only had musketts when the constitution was writtent" argument. At the time of the signing of the constitution, 2a included the right to own ship sail and cannon... A heavily armed ship would have been capable of SEVERELY damaging a small town. A small fleet of such ships could lay waste to it.

Here is a list of my cited works from a paper I did a few years ago on armed women. Some of these may get you where you need to go.

Second Amendment Library at http://www.guncite.com/2ndlawlib.html, especially the Law Reviews section.

It's a collection of more "scholarly" rather than "populist" works.

Although as Glenn Reynolds noted in "A Critical Guide to the Second Amendment" (1995):

[blockquote]
My final observation has less to do with constitutional law than with good manners as applied to constitutional law. It has been my experience, as a constitutional scholar who has written on Second Amendment issues, that I have gotten a much greater response from members of the non-academic community regarding those topics than when I have written on, say, the Commerce Clause.[223] It has also been my experience that although a few of the individuals who have contacted me could fairly be classified as "nuts," the vast majority have been intelligent, well-read, and polite. Many of them have been far more knowledgeable about the Second Amendment, its history, its caselaw, and its academic treatment than are most professors of constitutional law.

I wrote one for a speech course, aced it and the course.I got alot of information at the library, here in some of the forms from various opinions,..and just my own experience in trends including those opinions expressed by anti-gunners and the flawed logic used.yes..it was heavily biased towards no more gun control and even the 2 antigunners in the class bought it.

go to the search function of this site and type in key words and see what that gets you.how many minutes does it have to be?

Haha!!

Snark,

How's it going man? I'm getting ready to start my pursuasive speech for my speech class also! I was thinking of doing the same subject! That is hilarious. Do you have the Thinkwell books? My class is online w/the exception of actually giving the speeches which are taped in a group. I have not decided on whether I was going to do a speech on this particular subject. Mostly because I have been taking care of other classwork.

How far have you gotten to this point? What are the parameters for the speech?

JPFO Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. There isn't another group I know of that has first hand experience with being disarmed.

Thanks so much for all the help everyone.
You guys are awesome

Myrockfight - The perameters for my speech are pretty broad. Just a persuasive speech for five to six minutes. Preferably one on a question of policy. I have the rough draft for my outline done, and i need to start molding and editing it now. I don't have any of the Thinkwell books, but I will look into them now.

everyone - All the links have been a great help for my speech.
Thanks again

I'll see what I can find in my old bib. I did a persuasive speech on the AWB, but some of the authors I pulled info from spoke on other gun topics as well.
